I got in a nice gemstone, and decided to share some pictures. It is a very clean genstone, and pastel pink.
I put a wheat penny I found in pocket change, next to this stone for perspective:
The color is closer here, but tungsten light doesn't do this stone justice, it is pale pink:
Here we see a stone cut for weight only, where the angles governed by the refractive index (RI) were ignored. This results in what is called fish eye in gemstones, because you can see through the center of the stone.
What I will have to do, is measure the Refractive index of this specific topaz, and recut this stone to a smaller size; using the proper angles, to get back the internal fire.
It will be difficult, because topaz has a known problem with splitting on one axis; so recutting can break the stone by this cleaving action. This is a high quality crystal, and recut it will be stunning.
I buy these, and just treat them like rough gem material. This one is a delicate pink, and if it cleaves; I will make several smaller stones from the pieces.
