75 kilometers to the south of the city of Antofagasta, this impressive 11-meter sculpture emerges from the heart of the desert. The work belongs to the Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal, who began to build it at the beginning of the 90s and who finally saw the light of March 28, 1992. Huge stone hands made by this same artist are also found on La Brava beach from Punta del Este, in the Juan Carlos I Park in Madrid, and in Venice.

According to the author of it, each visitor to the Hand of the Desert can give their own interpretation of the meaning of this sculpture. Some say it is the city saying goodbye to the traveler. A 75 kilómetros hacia el sur de la ciudad de Antofagasta, emerge desde el corazón del desierto esta impresionante escultura de 11 metros. La obra pertenece al artista chileno Mario Irarrázabal, quien a comienzos de la década de los 90 comenzó a construirla y que finalmente vio la luz 28 de marzo de 1992. Enormes manos de piedra elaboradas por este mismo artista se hallan también en la playa La Brava de Punta del Este, en el Parque de Juan Carlos I de Madrid, y en Venecia.

Según su autor, cada visitante a la Mano del Desierto puede darle su propia interpretación del significado de esta escultura. Algunos dicen que es la ciudad despidiéndose del viajero.
