The sculptor was George Julian Zolnay, a Hungarian immigrant who came to America in 1893 for the Columbian Exposition and fell in love with the country. Already recognized as a brilliant sculptor in Europe, he created a masterpiece for George D. Barnard. The monument is granite cut in Quincy and bronze.

BY 1914 Whaling was ending in New Bedford which had around 100,000 Inhabitants at the time and was moving into a new industry textiles, and this memorial is to capture both the past and going forward at the time it celebrates both whaling and textiles as I hope these shots will show
At the top is a bronze figure of a young stalwart mechanic to typify manufacturing.

I have tried to find out a bit more about Georg D Barnard, without much success I must say all I found is he was born in the City and went away to make his fame, but wanted to give back to his place of birth and did so with this statues which I think cost around $50,000 at the time.
and that he passed away less than a year after after this statue was dedicated

I dont really have much more to sday about it but do have a few more photos I took shots from all angles
Now those that know me are probably surprised all the shots of this Memorial have bene in color, I do tend often to go for Mono for statues and memorials, but the last few shots I will switch to Mono

I think Mono shots bring out more of the cool detail in the statues especially these ones around the base.

But couldnt resist finishing with a Mono edit of the full statue
And that’s all folks
