The Hurricane Barrier Wall
For this post I am going to focus on the Hurricane Barrier wall here in New Bedford,
It cost $1,000 a foot, is long enough to span the 3.5 mile width of New Bedford, is as high (and wider ) than The Great Wall of China, and has enough steel in it to build a Navy destroyer.
Its two huge steel navigational-sector gates weigh 400 tons apiece-each 35 tons heavier than the biggest locomotive ever built-and each as tall as a six-story house. When the gates swing shut at the touch of a button to lock out devastating storm tides, they create a pond inside the barrier which could cover 6,500 acres of land with a foot of water. They keep out much more of course.
These shots are not the part of the barrier walk that has a walkway installed on top but at the end of the Harbor walk portion and heading to the gates.
This first shot is a 73 second exposure ( yes it was pretty dark when I took this) beside the wall, and my favorite shot of this series.
At the top of those poles I believe are solar panels to power lights which serves as a guide to ships coming in.

This next shot shows a portion of the wall and someone has painted character on it, not sure if it is Chinese or Japanese ( or some other language) and also I don't know what it says, which I gues sis obvious and could have not been said since I don't know what language it is

At the end of this portion of the wall is the control room and gate I mentioned that closes off the wall in a storm or hurricane, the other side of the gate joins with the Fairhaven portion of the Barrier wall

And another shot of the walkway beside the wall

And another very early morning shot looking over the wall with stars clear in the sky.

And finishing off looking at the top of the Hurricane Barrier, now after my wife's fall and injury last year she does worry ( too much sometimes) about me slipping and falling when out on my own and asked me not to walk on the top of this portion of the wall, So officially I didn't and this shot could possible have bene taken from on the harbor walk
But for the record the time I did fall recently was not on this walk if I did walk on this spot ( not saying I did) I would have bene very careful to watch my step and where I was walking, unlike what I was doing in another place when I was so focused on what I wanted a shot of I did not pay enough attention to where I was walking.
