In the heart of Madagascar’s untouched southwest [🇬🇧 - 🇪🇸]

🇬🇧 I’d like to share one of the most memorable chapters of my life. For three years, I lived in a remote corner of Madagascar’s southwest coast, where the land meets the turquoise waters of the Mozambique Channel. I ran an adventure school there, days filled with sailing, kayaking, surfing and kitesurfing, as well as motorbike and quad expeditions through wild landscapes.

This place was truly off the beaten track. No roads led there. To reach it, you had to choose between an eight-hour off-road odyssey or a one-hour boat ride from Toliara. Once you arrived, the rest of the world seemed to fade away, leaving only the sound of the wind, the sea, and the laughter of people living life at a slower pace.

🇪🇸 Me gustaría compartir uno de los capítulos más memorables de mi vida. Durante tres años viví en un rincón remoto de la costa suroeste de Madagascar, donde la tierra se encuentra con las aguas turquesas del canal de Mozambique. Allí dirigía una escuela de aventura: días llenos de vela, kayak, surf y kitesurf, así como expediciones en moto y quad a través de paisajes salvajes.

Este lugar estaba realmente fuera de los caminos habituales. No había carreteras que llegaran hasta allí. Para alcanzarlo, había que elegir entre una odisea todoterreno de ocho horas o una travesía en barco de una hora desde Toliara. Una vez allí, el resto del mundo parecía desvanecerse, dejando solo el sonido del viento, del mar y de las risas de la gente que vivía a un ritmo más lento.

🇬🇧 As soon as I arrived, I set about building my house, perched in a spot with a breathtaking view of the lagoon and the open sea. Not long after, I met Peter, an 18-year-old local with a quick smile and boundless energy, and asked him to help me run my small adventure business. I was 50 at the time, yet age seemed irrelevant.

For nearly four years, we spent every day together, working, laughing, exploring. He taught me the rhythms of local life, the traditions, the quiet wisdom of the land. In return, I showed him a different way of living, one shaped by my travels and the sea.

It was an extraordinary chapter in my life. Peter became far more than just a colleague; he became my friend. And I hope the feeling was mutual.

🇪🇸 En cuanto llegué, me puse a construir mi casa, situada en un lugar con una vista impresionante de la laguna y el mar abierto. Poco después conocí a Peter, un joven local de 18 años, con una sonrisa rápida y una energía inagotable, y le pedí que me ayudara a dirigir mi pequeño negocio de aventura. Yo tenía 50 años en ese momento, pero la edad parecía no importar.

Durante casi cuatro años, pasamos juntos cada día, trabajando, riendo y explorando. Él me enseñó los ritmos de la vida local, las tradiciones, la sabia tranquilidad de la tierra. A cambio, yo le mostré una forma diferente de vivir, moldeada por mis viajes y el mar.

Fue un capítulo extraordinario en mi vida. Peter se convirtió en mucho más que un colega; se volvió mi amigo. Y espero que el sentimiento haya sido mutuo.

🇬🇧 Our house was located 300 meters from the sea and about 1 km from the village. It is a fishing village, formerly semi-nomadic, called Vezo. Every person owns a traditional dugout canoe with a square sail, which is a source of pride. Fishing is organized daily according to the thermal winds.

🇪🇸 Nuestra casa estaba situada a 300 metros del mar y a unos 1 km del pueblo. Es un pueblo de pescadores, antiguamente semi-nómada, llamado Vezo. Cada persona posee su piragua con vela cuadrada, que es su orgullo. La pesca se organiza diariamente en función de los vientos térmicos.

🇬🇧 In this arid region, fresh water is a daily challenge. Some canoes make the trip to the river to collect fresh water, but further south, people dig into the sand to access the surface layer of water, which is less salty.
