‘Cinematic Street Photography’ isn’t just the title of my latest photography book, but also my motto for taking at least one photographic stroll in every city I visit. I try to capture everyday scenes and photograph people going about their daily lives as unobtrusively as possible, so that these images can later be made to look like scenes from a blockbuster film during post-processing. If you’re familiar with my photos, you’ll know that I specialised in a dark, moody look.

"Filmreife Straßenfotografie" ist nicht nur der Titel meines neuesten Fotografie-Ratgebers, sondern auch mein Motto für zumindest einen Foto-Spaziergang in jeder Stadt, die ich besuche. Dabei versuche ich Alltagsszenen einzufangen, Leute die Ihrem Alltag nachgehen möglichst unauffällig zu fotografieren, um diese Bilder später im Zuge der Nachbearbeitung, wie Szenen aus einem Blockbuster erscheinen zu lassen. Wenn ihr meine Fotos kennt, wisst ihr, dass ich mich dabei auf einen düsteren, stimmungsvollen Look spezialisiert habe.

That’s why I particularly love taking photos after dark – often even in fog or rain. That’s how I try to create this atmospheric look. Of course, you need the right equipment for photos like these. In my case, that’s the Sony A7RIII combined with telephoto focal lengths and a wide aperture. For these photos, I used my beloved Tamron 70-180mm F2.8, which has an incredibly reliable autofocus, which is a huge advantage for this kind of photography.

Ich liebe es deshalb besonders, nach Anbruch der Dunkelheit zu fotografieren – oft sogar bei Nebel oder Regen. So versuche ich, diesen atmosphärischen Look zu kreieren. Natürlich benötigt man für solche Bilder auch die passende Ausrüstung. In meinem Fall ist es die Sony A7RIII in Kombination mit Tele-Brennweiten und offener Blende. Für diese Fotos verwendete ich mein geliebtes Tamron 70-180mm F2.8, das über einen unglaublich zuverlässigen Autofokus verfügt, was bei derartigen Bildern ein großer Vorteil ist.

Glasgow city centre is truly ideal for cinematic street photography, as it has a very urban and gritty feel. At the same time, there are always plenty of people about. The streets are partly laid out in a grid pattern, so you can often photograph streets far away through narrow alleyways. If you’re patient and wait for someone to cross the street at just the right moment, you’ll be rewarded with some particularly fascinating shots. Glasgow’s character also reminded me in parts of US cities like Chicago and Seattle. So if you’re looking for that vibe, I can highly recommend the Scottish metropolis.

Das Stadtzentrum von Glasgow eignet sich wirklich außerordentlich gut für cinematische Straßenfotografie, da es sehr urban und roh wirkt. Zugleich sind ständig jede Menge Leute unterwegs. Die Straßen sind teilweise schachbrettartig angeordnet und somit kann man oft durch schmale Gassen weit entfernte Straßen fotografieren. Wer geduldig ist und wartet, bis eine Person im richtigen Moment die Straße passiert, wird hier mit besonders faszinierenden Aufnahmen belohnt. Der Charakter von Glasgow erinnerte mich teilweise auch an US-Städte wie Chicago und San Francisco. Wenn ihr diesen Vibe sucht, kann ich euch die schottische Metropole also sehr empfehlen.

During post-processing in Lightroom, I used my self-created ‘Deep Blue Night’ preset, which really emphasises the teal and orange colour contrasts. But a preset alone isn’t enough to create truly striking images. That’s just what photographers who want to sell you their own presets will tell you. The real magic lies in masking. That’s why I edit every photo individually using numerous masks. I hope you like the pictures and wish you a lovely Sunday!

In der Nachbearbeitung in Lightroom kam mein selbst erstelltes "Deep Blue Night" Preset zum Einsatz, das Teal & Orange Farbkontraste besonders betont. Ein Preset allein reicht aber nicht für wirklich starke Aufnahmen. Das erzählen höchstens Fotografen, die euch ihre eigenen Presets verkaufen möchten. Die eigentliche Magie liegt in der Maskierung. Deshalb bearbeite ich auch jedes Foto einzeln mit zahlreichen Masken. Ich hoffe, die Bilder gefallen euch und wünsche euch einen schönen Sonntag!
