I have a DIY pinhole lens for my dSLR. Without an extension tube it is about an f/really-tiny and perhaps about the equivalent of a 80mm lens. Being a pinhole everything is in focus, or as much focus as a pinhole lens offers. It has very quickly become one of my favourite 'lenses.'
I also happen to have a vase full of dried out roses. I love dried roses; I find that the colour of the petals becomes much more vibrant, deep, and gorgeous.
Pinhole photography requires a very long shutter release. A number of years ago I made a pinhole camera out of a cylindrical oatmeal container and used black and white photographic paper instead of film (it developed into a positive image, instead of a negative). The big difference between that analogue camera and my dSLR is not even that the dSLR is colour; it's that the dSLR needs to be configured for white balance. This is even more important than the ISO setting. Incorrect white balance can completely ruin an otherwise fine image.
Of course, the lens also requires light. For these pictures I placed the vase of roses into a light box so was able to control the light.
I was torn between how much editing of the image I wanted to do after the fact. Ultimately I did choose to post process the images; the pinhole lens is just a lens, after all, and I don't feel I'm ruining the feel of the lens.
The lens offers a soft, dreamy feel to the pictures. I still want to work on some portraits with it, but my boys won't let me, and the animals won't sit still. So roses it is! And dead roses at that.
Roses are red,
Violets are not blue.
This poem does not rhyme,
But the pictures are nice!
