Tevye is a simple milkman who lives with his wife and five daughters in a village in Ukraine. One afternoon, while giving birth, he meets a student from kyiv with revolutionary ideals. The two bond and Tevye offers her a house and food in exchange for tutoring one of her daughters. Meanwhile, a tough, widowed butcher asks his eldest daughter's hand in marriage.¨
It is an adaptation of the longest-running musical in Broadway history, which premiered in 1964. Four years later, the film rights were acquired, the production cost $9 million, and by the end of its run, United Artists had grossed more than 40 million dollars.
The script of this story was based on a collection of short stories by the genius of Ukrainian literature, Sholom Aleichem. Israeli actor Topol, best known for his leading roles in London plays, participated in the film. The film won three Academy Awards for Best Picture, Sound and Music. Some of his songs, such as "If I Were Rich", were very popular.
