One of the beauty of life is diversity as seen in different cultures of the world. Culture as generally defined is the way of life of people and this differs in different race, ethnicity and nations of the world. Music is a form of art which involves creativity, expression and is dynamic in nature. These attributes of music made it to be understood and expressed in different ways across different cultures of the world based on specific believes, interests and understanding.
Music as generally defined is the pleasant combination of sounds that are pleasing to the hear at a certain frequency. Music has been since the inception of man and has been expressed in certain ways in different cultures of the world up until now though with some modifications overtime. Therefore, it is worthwhile to say here that music and culture are two agelong duo of we humans. Music is expressible in different ways as singing, playing musical instruments and can also be combined with dancing, clapping, body gestures, laughing or with even a drama.
Here in Africa with diverse cultures and ethnicity, music is seen of old time expressed as lullabies, folk songs, evening time story songs etc. Also, music inform of singing and drumming is of high importance to royalties, dignitaries as it is used in greeting and welcoming a King into a brand new day by the Palace musicians and also in welcoming them to important occasions even up until now especially the Yoruba culture in Southwestern part of Nigeria. In addition, music was used in the to announce the start of a war as a sound of war involving singing and chanting war songs accompanied with drumming.
Also here in Africa and in other cultures of the world, music especially the traditional music is of high importance in the celebration of festivals, wedding, burial, chieftaincy installation and so on. This involves the use of cultural troupes who will be entertaining with their musical sounds accompanied with display aswell. Infact, there are some families who are known primarily for music in some cultures and they have passed it down right unto different generations up until now.
In Africa, the use of local drums mostly percussion instruments are prominent and can be learnt if desired to. However, in the western culture, another set of musical instruments is made use of like drumset, keyboard, guitars and so on to express their music. It is good to note that in Africa culture, traditional music is the prominent kind of music while in the western culture, contemporary, classical music and other types of music are the prominent ones.
In Africa and in some other cultures of the world, music can be used for entertainment purpose and in some other times for educational purpose through proverbial songs and stories. Not only this, because of the inherent power of music to calm the mind/soul or to elate it, music is used to cheer up, to provide a soothing relief, in some healing process especially the emotionally related ones. In different religions and cultures, music is of essence and used during traditional rites, prayers and the likes.
In recent times, music has evolved over time in different cultures and nations of the world where with the use of technology, it is possible to reach, learn and know the music of other cultures. There is now improvement on the use of musical instruments with different music studios and music schools arising where it is possible to produce and learn music from different cultures and countries. Now, the old time songs especially the traditional music are now documented and filed to preserve this heritage from extinction.
Now, there are inter-cultural music collaborations where musicians from different cultures, tribes and even nations now do a musical collaboration to forster unity and peace. In all, music has come along way in different cultures, tribes and nations of the world and is one of the strongest forces that binds and unites us together fostering peace and unity.
Indeed, music and culture are agelong duo. Thank you for reading and comments, contributions are welcomed.
