Afro-beat is one of the major type of music widely known and accepted in my country Nigeria. Music has evolved greatly right from the traditional folk music with the likes of Hubert Ogunde to that of juju music with the likes of King Sunny Ade, Chief Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi (commander) to the fuji music with artiste like Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, Kollington Ayinla, Wasiu Ayinde and now afro-beat with the likes Fela-Anikulapo Kuti, Orlando Julius, Davido etc.
My favorite afrobeat artiste is David Adedeji Adeleke popular known as Davido. Davido is one of the highly influential Nigerian afrobeat artiste who has brought the country to limelight by his music. Davido songs are widely accepted by home and abroad, he has widely performed at different stages nationally and internationally winning several awards. Davido is a singer and songwriter with some of his hit songs includes; Dami-duro, assurance etc. The following are the major reasons why Davido is my favorite afrobeat artiste:
• His musical prowess
Davido is one of the musical sensation in Nigeria not just for talent sake but in skills aswell. He read music as a course of study and graduated from Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun state, Nigeria in the year 2015 been the pioneer music student. This actually helped his musical skillfulness and made him a sought for amidst other afrobeat musicians. It takes courage and humility to go back to school to have a formal academic degree after making a debut and rising to fame.
• His national and international impact
Davido musical impact and influency is felt both in Nigeria and also at international levels. He has been a guest artiste at many events, concerts and on several platforms e.g. his live performance at AFCON 2017, 2022 World cup at Qatar. Also, he has organised several concerts home and abroad with massive attendance. In Nigeria, his music and personality has brought fame to this country even with the government recognising this with a nationa award.
• His sense of belonging and family ties
Davido is one of the few Nigerian afrobeat artiste with renowned background and with a huge sense of family belonging and ties. For example, Davido was influential to his uncle's governorship ambition then coming to reality in my state Osun State in Nigeria who is now the incumbent governor. Also, it was announced of his recent wedding plan with his widely known fiancee of many years. All these made me to like him. He stood out been a good example amidst other artistes.
• His collaboration with other musicians coupled with his philanthropic gestures
Davido has done collaborations with other music artiste such as Adekunle Gold, Mafikizolo and others which shows good partnership and magnanimity. Through this, some upcoming artiste are brought to limelight and the image of afrobeat is promoted with collaboration involving established artiste. In addition, his philanthropic gestures is second to none all because of his generousity and a good sense of responsibility.
• His captivating music
Davido's music is captivating with his distinct vocal showing dexterity having a good lyrical content and a sound instrumental. His video productions are good, artistic and well captured. Also, the consistency in his musical production can never be neglected with each production been a good sound.
Afrobeat is a sought after here in Nigeria and the huge impact of artiste like Davido can't be overlooked. Davido a.k.a OBO is my favourite afrobeat artiste. Infact, the city of Houston in the USA declared July 7 as "Davido Day" just to honour him. Thank you for reading and comments, contributions are welcomed.
