Christian music which some refers to as "gospel" music is my favourite music genre. It belongs to the type of musc called inspirational and has various dimensions to it like christian rap, christian rock, contemporary gospel, hymnals, christian classicals and so many other ones. As the name implies, this music genre is typical of the Christian faith and it reflects in various tribes, languages, ethnicity as christian traditional songs. Christian music is a broad kind of music having several expressions and dimensions to it and has wide recognition and acceptance.
As a Nigerian of the southwestern part of the country and of a christian faith, christian music is the first set of music genre i was introduced to even as a young boy and by the privilege of been a chorister aswell as an instrumentalist (a keyboardist) specifically, this is the major music genre i grew up with and still in today. Both traditional and "foreign" majorly contemporary gospel are the ones i grew up with and notable among the gospel musicians then are Don Moen, Ron Kenoly, Tope Alabi, Bukola Akinade (Senwele Jesu) and others. Now, there are new ones like Nathaniel Bassey, Dunsin Oyekan, Travis Greene, Judikay, Mercy Chinwo, Frank Edward etc.
Another dimension of christian music i gre up and fascinated with is the Church music majorly the Hymnals and classical songs. By been raised of an orthodox church background (a Baptist), i knew quite a number of hymnals, hymn writers, hymn stories, christian classical songs both traditional or foreign. It's remarkable that when i got admitted to the University, i encountered another side of christian/gospel music which is the contemporary gospel music where songs especially from foreign contemporary gospel artistes are been scored and sang e.g. Kierra Sheard, Kari jobe, Alvin slaughter, Elevation worship, Hillsong etc. Christian (gospel) music genre is my favourite because of the following reasons:
• IT IS INSPIRING AND IT ALIGNS WITH MY FAITH
One undeniable fact about Christian music is that it is highly inspiring and soul lifting. There has been many testimonies of burdens been lifted, joy been restored by listening to a gospel music. Also, because it aligns with my faith, christian music is my favorite.
• IT HAS GOOD LYRICAL CONTENT, RHYTHM AND MELODY
The lyrical contents of christian music are of rich value and inspiring which fascinates me to it. The lyrical content can be a word of prayer, counsel, admonition and so on which makes it to be of acceptance to me. The rhythm is also a catch for me been an instrumentalist. Also, christian music are melodious and this is one of the reason for its recognition and acceptability.
• OF ITS MANY DIMENSIONS AND EXPRESSIONS
The many expressions and dimensions to Christian music genre makes it to be acceptable to me as one can explore as many options as possible based on the interest. For example, as an instrumentalist, i do contemporary gospel music, traditional gospel, classical gospel music which makes me to fit anywhere i go to play or invited to play.
• OF ITS WIDE RECOGNITION, ACCEPTANCE AND APPLICATIONS
Christan music is found applicable in Churches, Schools, gatherings/events etc. Even, in other genres of music, the background knowledge gotten from Christian music are applicable to them. Many popular musicians and artistes has had one thing or the other to do with Christian music in one way or the other in time past which shows its wide recognition and applications. Back in the olden days, the famous missionary schools deals with Christian music and from there many talents were discovered and some acquired the skills which makes them outstanding today.
• OF ITS ORIGINALITY, CREATIVITY AND COLLABORATIONS
Christian music promotes originality and creativity as found in beautiful compositions, song arrangements of the various dimensions of it. Also, there are a number of collaborations, team productions, group productions, choral productions etc which all makes christian music more interesting and fascinating. The melodious combinations of various vocals and instruments by different gospel musicians shows how creative christian music can be.
