A favourite artiste is someone that you never get tired of listening to, someone that his songs brings you so much joy, lightens up your mood and wants you to get into your dancing shoes. Afrobeat is a genre that has now gone viral worldwide. We now have different afrobeat artistes selling out shows outside Nigeria and having millions of streams on their music from different countries. There is Wizkid who sold out the 02 arena twice under few minutes , Burnaboy who won the grammy in 2021 for Best Global Music Album for his album "Twice as Tall" and Davido who was called to perform for the opening of the 2022 World Cup which is the biggest tournament ever in football. Regarding that, we have several other afrobeat artistes making Nigeria proud such as Rema whose song "Calm Down" has now over billion streams the most of any artiste ever in Africa. We also have beautiful female artistes such as Tems, Ayra Starr,Tiwa Savage to mention but a few. You will agree with me afrobeat is now one of the biggest genres in the world now.
There are alot of afrobeat artistes that have melodious voice and exceptional lyrics and are doing good for themselves. However, amongst all the afrobeat artistes the person I love listening to the most and is my favourite is "Davido".
I have been listening to Davido since his first song "Dami duro" which was song hw released in 2011. The song was for his haters and people who were wishing and wanted him to fall off because he had a rich dad. The main lyrics of the song " Ema dami duro dami duro yeah,
Emi omo babalowo babalowo olowo olowo,
Ani wo fe dami duro dami duro duro,
Ewo won won fe bami nawo bami nawo nawo" means "Don't try to stop me or pull me down just because I have a rich dad,see them been trying to drag me down and stop me from achieving my goal" . The beat and rhythm of this song is something that resonates with me and made me love the song then. Infact, it's song I can still listen to and sing word for word without leaving any part out.
Why is Davido my favourite afrobeat artiste??
.The way he sings his songs is just different from other artistes which is something big for me also his songs always lighten up my mood , even the beat and the lyrics of his songs are usually top notch. There is no way you will listen to this song and won't feel like dancing or singing along.
.His willingness to be great. Yes, he has a billionaire father who is popularly known in Nigeria but still didn't rely solely on him to make it in life rather he decided to go into music to make his own money and made his own name . Now alot of people know him and listen to his music everyday all over the world.
.His consistency. Davido has been in the music industry right from 2011 and he still releasing music and dropping hit songs till this day. There have been alot of artistes that started the same time with him but are nowhere to be found today in the industry. Some even released one song went vital and just went extinct but he is still available now, singing and making everyone happy and uplifted. I was happy he got nominated for the lasy grammy award which was expected after a long time, but it was a sad thing for me as he lost all the 3 nominations he had and didn't get anyone. I just hope he gets to win a Grammy in the coming years because he really deserves it.
.His humility. He is someone who is always humble and tries to work with other young artistes tries to work and move with them even though he knows he is bigger than most of them. He always gets bashed by several other Nigerians for these but I love the fact that he doesn't care but chooses to do what pleases him which is to help, influence and motivate other fellow upcoming afrobeat artistes in the music industry.
Finally, my favourite Davido song ever is "Nwa baby" which is a song I listen to and is still in my playlist till now.
