For Afri-tunes Week 154, I will be doing a keyboard cover of the song Taxi Driver by the legendary Bobby Benson. This song holds a special place in the history of Nigerian highlife music, and I am excited to share my version with you all.
Taxi Driver is a classic highlife tune first performed in the 1950s. This song humorously and engagingly tells the story of a man who has had enough of a promiscuous woman and no longer cares about her actions. The song is laced with rich instrumentation, catchy rhythms, and a melody that makes it unforgettable. One of the things I love most about highlife music is the way it tells deep stories while keeping the mood light and enjoyable.
My inspiration behind choosing this song stems from the realization that, at every stage in life, you must learn to let go of people who do not value you or want to stay. Holding on to toxic relationships, whether in friendships, business, or love, only brings pain and disappointment. Sometimes, the best decision is to walk away and focus on yourself.
Additionally, I am drawn to the instrumental arrangement of this song. The way the horns, guitars, and percussions blend together creates a sound that is both nostalgic and refreshing.
I hope you enjoy my keyboard cover of this classic highlife tune. Let’s keep celebrating African music!
