Hi Worklife friends, this is my first post in the community. I really didn’t know it existed until my friend 
Before I tell my first story, I would like to give you a little summary of my professional life. I am currently working as a teacher in an elementary school, but I don’t have a degree in education. I never really imagined myself teaching but life took me and put me there. I studied Food Technology and then did a postgraduate degree in Quality Control, I practiced my profession for 6 years but then took a 9 year break where I dedicated myself to the care and upbringing of my children.
In 2018 when I was given the opportunity to make a substitution teaching third grade students I never imagined that I would like to be in the classroom and teach children, so much so that I have been practicing this profession for 4 years and now I am studying a degree in Primary Education.

Antes de contar mi primera anécdota, me gustaría hacer un pequeño resumen de mi vida profesional. Actualmente trabajo como maestra en una escuela primaria, pero no tengo un título en educación. Realmente nunca me imaginé dando clases pero la vida me llevó y me puso ahí. Estudié Tecnología de los Alimentos y luego hice un postgrado en Control de Calidad, ejercí mi profesión durante 6 años pero luego me tomé un descanso de 9 años donde me dediqué al cuidado y crianza de mis hijos.
En 2019 cuando me dieron la oportunidad de hacer una suplencia dando clases a estudiantes de tercero de primaria nunca imaginé que me gustaría estar en el aula y enseñar a niños, tanto es así que hace 4 años que ejerzo esta profesión y ahora estoy estudiando el grado en Educación Primaria.
Mi último trabajo con mis estudiantes de segundo grado, niños entre 7 y 8 años, fue la culminación del año escolar 2022-2023. En mi país Venezuela el año escolar termina en julio y para el cierre pedagógico se prepara una presentación por grado, este año el tema estaba relacionado con nuestro país, así que en mi planificación final trabajamos el estado donde vivimos,(capital, municipios, tradiciones culturales, gastronomía) y para nuestra presentación, preparamos el baile tradicional de la Burra o la Burriquita, declarado Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación en 2016. Existen varias canciones con las que se puede bailar la Burra, yo elegí la canción del grupo Un Solo Pueblo llamada La Burra.
En mis cuatro años como docente no había podido preparar esta coreografía con mis estudiantes, pero este año la tenía en mente a pesar de que eran niños más pequeños que en años anteriores, así que comencé los ensayos un mes antes de la presentación. Venezuela atraviesa un periodo conflictivo debido a la lucha por un salario justo para los profesores. Por esa razón solo estamos dando clases dos días a la semana (es muy triste para los niños) pero para no ocupar esos dos días ensayando el baile, decidí trabajar un tercer día con los niños que iban a participar y ensayar exclusivamente nuestro baile de "la Burra".
My last work with my second grade students, children between 7 and 8 years old, was the culmination of the 2022-2023 school year. In my country Venezuela the school year ends in July and for the pedagogical closure a presentation is prepared by grade, this year the theme was related to our country, so in my final planning we worked the state where we live,(capital, municipalities, cultural traditions, gastronomy) and for our presentation, we prepared the traditional dance of the Burra or the Burriquita, declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 2016. There are several songs with which you can dance the Burra, I chose the song of the group Un Solo Pueblo called La Burra.
In my four years as a teacher I had not been able to prepare this choreography with my students, but this year it was on my mind even though they were younger children than in previous years, so I started rehearsals a month before the presentation. Venezuela is going through a period of conflict due to the struggle for a fair salary for teachers. For that reason we are only teaching two days a week (it is very sad for the children) but in order not to occupy those two days rehearsing the dance, I decided to work a third day with the children who were going to participate and rehearse exclusively our dance of “la Burra”.
Al principio no tenía la Burra porque mi colegio no tiene Burra propia y siempre es prestado o alquilado. Desde el primer día empecé a buscar a alguien que tuviera uno para que me lo prestara, la verdad es que no quería pagarlo. Pero como es patrimonio cultural hay una Red Nacional de Burras y Burriquitas y quien tiene uno es muy celoso con su propiedad y no le gusta prestarlo. El caso es que no me desanimé y empecé a ensayar, en cada uno de los ensayos yo era la Burra y así iba guiando a mis estudiantes al siguiente paso. Mi primera idea fue poner a una estudiante de quinto de primaria a bailar la Burro pero al final decidí que tenía que hacerlo yo para que todo saliera como yo quería, además los niños estaban acostumbrados a que yo les guiara.
Conforme se acercaba el día, me sentía ansiosa porque no tenía "la Burra" y todo listo, lo bueno es que la mamá de un de mis estudiantes es maestra y en su lugar de trabajo sí tienen una, la cual pidió y se la prestaron. Me alegró mucho saber que todo iba sobre ruedas.
At the beginning I didn’t have the donkey because my school doesn’t have its own donkey and it is always borrowed or rented. From the first day I started looking for someone who had one that I could borrow, I really didn’t want to pay for it. But as it is cultural heritage there is a National Network of Donkeys and Burriquitas and whoever has one is very jealous with his property and does not like to lend it. The fact is that I was not discouraged and I began to rehearse, in each of the rehearsals I was the Donkey and so I was guiding my students to the next step. My first idea was to put a fifth grade student to dance the donkey but in the end I decided that I had to do it myself so that everything would go as I wanted, besides the children were used to me guiding them.
As the day approached, I felt anxious because I didn’t have “la Burra” and everything was ready, the good thing is that the mother of one of my students is a teacher and at her place of work they do have one, which she asked for and they lent it to her. I was very happy to know that everything was going smoothly.
El día de la clausura pedagógica llegaron mis estudiantes, hermosos, aptos para el evento. Por un momento me sentí nerviosa, era la primera vez que actuaba en cualquier tipo de danza y más en esta que requiere un traje que pesa unos 10 kilos, una estudiante de quinto grado no creo que hubiera podido con él, era muy pesado. Tuvimos bastante público porque a esta actividad asisten todos los grados y representantes que pueden hacerlo, así que había mucha gente en la escuela, y yo tenía más nervios 😰😬.
Algunos compañeros me preguntaban si me daba vergüenza, pero la verdad es que no, cuando trabajamos con niños lo mínimo que nos debe dar es vergüenza, y en este caso cuando hemos ensayado tanto menos, lo que quería era mostrar el trabajo que nos había llevado todas esas semanas. Como somos de 2º de primaria fuimos los segundos en pasar y sin mentir fuimos la sensación del día. Mis estudiantes lo hicieron excelente, cada uno sabía lo que tenía que hacer, no estaban nerviosos, mientras bailábamos les hablaba igual que en los ensayos para que se rieran y todo saliera bonito como queríamos.
On the day of the pedagogical closing my students arrived, beautiful, fit for the event. For a moment I felt nervous, it was the first time I performed in any kind of dance and even more in this one that requires a costume that weighs about 10 kilos, a fifth grader I don’t think I could have handled it, it was very heavy. We had quite an audience because this activity is attended by all grades and representatives who can do it, so there were a lot of people in the school, and I had more nerves 😰😬.
Some classmates asked me if I was embarrassed, but the truth is that no, when we work with children the least we should be embarrassed, and in this case when we have rehearsed so much less, what I wanted was to show the work that had taken us all those weeks. As we are from 2nd grade we were the second to pass and no lie we were the sensation of the day. My students did excellent, each one knew what he had to do, they were not nervous, while we danced I talked to them just like in rehearsals so that they laughed and everything came out beautifully as we wanted.
Para ese día me convertí en "la Burra" del colegio porque todos querían fotos conmigo 😂 grandes y pequeños 🤣. Padres y representantes me felicitaron por el trabajo que había hecho con los niños y creo que eso es lo único que nos queda a los maestros de este país, la satisfacción de que estamos haciendo un buen trabajo y que hay gente que nos lo agradece.
Bueno amigos, este fue mi primer relato, espero seguir publicando mis experiencias y el trabajo que hago con mis estudiantes en esta comunidad.
For that day I became “the Donkey” of the school because everyone wanted pictures with me 😂 big and small 🤣. Parents and representatives congratulated me for the work I had done with the children and I think that’s the only thing left for us teachers in this country, the satisfaction that we are doing a good job and that there are people who thank us for it.
