As I was the youngest in the family, having three elder brothers, I was never pushed to work or earn money. I had a very relaxed and wonderful young life. I was pushed to focus on my studies which I did till 10th grade but later, I got lost somewhere. I was of the mind that I don’t have to do anything. I still that chill time I was having but actually, I was wasting my time in useless things.
I used to sit with my friends at Chai ka Hotel (tea stalls) every night. One of my friend was working with his uncle in Industrial Machines field. One night, he asked me if I am interested to do a job. I was like yes, Why not. His uncle need an assistant cum computer operator. I agreed and went to the shop with him the very next day.
There were two shops of his uncle in the main market of sewing machines. One was a type of office he built for himself and kept few big imported industrial machines and the other one was a workshop, where there were two man who repair and sell sewing machines. The Boss, my friend’s uncle just asked few basic questions, it was not a typical interview and asked me to join with gross salary of RS. 3000. This is how I had my first Job in 2006. My system and seating was in office, security monitor having surveillance camera video of workshop was also there at my seat to take care of second place as well. I was feeling very happy with my chill job. I just had to attend the calls and answer the emails which were not much.
My friend mostly work at workshop in learning and practicing on sewing machines, repairing and selling them. I don’t have to do much, just sit and relax on that comfortable seat. In a month or so, I was given the keys of the shops as I was the only punctual in the team. I used to be there on time, open both the shops and take care of them until my friend arrive. The Boss usually visits in the evening, he was busy all day with his partner at some other place, always planning to have business trip to Turkey for big machines. I do remember each and every moment of my seven months at that place. Honestly, it was just time pass but still I learnt a lot from my first job, being punctual, email communication, knowledge about Juki machines, working with people of different minds. I didn’t learn sales though.
The funniest day at this job: One day my friend and other colleagues planned to sell the scrap material held at upper part of the shop for more than a year. It was not an easy job, all of them were busy in pulling the material down, selecting the useful and useless things, putting the useful things back to the upper portion. They all got tired whereas I was sitting in the A/C room playing solitaire on my system. When everything was done and scrap was sold, I went to them and asked how much is for each of us? They look at each other and said, why you? You did nothing? I told them I was taking care of other shop through CCTV and informed you whenever we had customer there. It was the part of it as well. They unhappily have to agree on that and the money was divided into all of us equally. I can’t forget those faces hehehe
I had great moments and some unpleasant ones too in these seven months of my first job. That is it for the day and will share some other stories in upcoming posts. Cheers!!
