The 6 methods that I have tested to record guitar with a smartphone or minimal equipment like a headset microphone.
Finding the best way to record guitar after discovering that the method I thought was working didn't work as expected.
Using your existing phone and headset there's zero cost involved and the results of such a method of recording can be surprisingly good.
There was no processing on the phone recordings but with a little bit of time and a digital audio workstation like cakewalk by bandlab which I used to process the last acoustic guitar recording or a similar DAW like ableton live or flstudio the sound may be improved dramatically.
The quality varies as you would imagine but some of the results were much better than I expected.
Some very good recordings came from putting the headset mic in front of a guitar amp.
The best audio results came from using the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface. No surprise there considering this device was designed precisely for that purpose.
Why record your guitar playing?
There are many reasons as to why people record their guitar. The obvious reason is that you are creating a literal record of your playing at that point in time. It's a way to track your progress over time.
It's just a fun thing to do.
Another reason to consider is whether you want to leave your music and ideas for future generations to discover.
This might sound grandiose and overblown but history is littered with music from long dead composers and some who are still alive that were rarely recognized in their own lifetime.
Occasionally an unknown musician or musical idea grabs the imagination of the public.
