It's been a slow week. Not having internet connection for half of the day makes it worse. But it's been a time to think and plan some posts. This isn't one of those. Something interesting happened today. You see there are some shoes I don't use anymore laying down in a basket in the cleaning room. Once I took them to check something and I have to place them back slowly where they were. The fact is, the was a pretty big spider in one of them. I'm not afraid of spiders, but I can't say the same about them and humans. Besides, I wouldn't like anyone picking up my house to do whatever with it.
This year, I've found spiders everywhere in the house. I think it has to do with the fact that I'm spending a lot of time in the house and altering their feeding behavior and all kind of things. But I always try to catch them in a jar and release them in either the back or front yards (not like my house has a lot of space anyways). I don't like killing them because they keep the flies and other pests at bay. But when peace is not an option, well, stomped they get.
However, I found it odd that a week after the shoe incident happened, I never saw that spider again. It is pretty big to be hidden at plain sight. I thought the lizards had eaten it. Or perhaps, it found another nook or cranny to hide during the day. In the morning, after I had finished jumping my rope, I was looking at a section of the ceiling and saw something moving. Under closer inspection, I found the spider having a snack. I told my mom who was picking the clothes that were drying under the sun. She saw the spider and then kept going. I know she doesn't like them and if she had the chance, she would've killed it.
I told her she should, this one is big enough that it was eating a pretty big cockroach. For me, that being deserves a medal. Like the lizards, it keeps the house clean. It might look frightening, but some of us do as well and you don't see people stomping everybody else. So, I went for my phone and took some pictures without getting too close to scare it off.
I dubbed my little spider Shelob. In honor of the big spider in Tolkien's works. It has its lair on the side of that beam. Later this day I saw a lizard approach this place and for a moment I thought there was going to be an epic turf war. But the lizard just went away and let the spider be. It is a relief. Both things are important to keep insects at bay, flies have been really annoying these months.
I was doing some research about Shelob and she might be from the Tegenaria species. These are common spiders that ca be found at home on a wall or the ceiling. I've only seen this one in action today. But I bet it has eaten a lot of bugs. Hopefully, it will eat even more. And that doesn't bother me at all.
