Hi fellow Ranters,
Today I'm back with a little bit of a talk to get my thoughts out about work and growth!
Fits and Spurts
The best laid plans are the ones that get foiled the most, aren't they?
I know that I've done a lot of planning to do X Y and Z for various things in my life and with my online activities and professional activities. What I find annoying though is that I'm not able to fully do some of them and it's starting to annoy me.
The work that I do is really a wonderful thing, I get to combine all kinds of cool stuff that I'm incredibly interested in and passionate about but what gets to me is when things get piled on, and get piled on, and get piled on yet more. This is where I start to get pretty damn annoyed, that there is so much focus on doing more work that companies don't take a step back and practice what they preach by letting employees spend a portion of their time each week doing things that are not only going to improve their life but also their work and life balance.
I don't have complaints about the role I'm in or the work that I'm doing but I'm trying to set some professional goals for myself and doing certain things like learning new skills and trying to do better at keeping other things active. I've gotten myself into a bit of a pickle though with the various BIG things that I've been working on, and these things have taken up so much of my time that I can't do anything else and I'm lucky to finish a work day at my normal hours of late.
I know, or at least hope.. that this is going to be a temporary stage in the development of things. We are in a rush to do a lot of things which is typical and probably cyclical for companies, at least I hope. What makes me laugh though is when they send out emails saying that the focus is about us as employees, learning, developing, getting new skills!!!!!!11 but then they give us 10 more tasks to do, or prepare to do X thing for the next quarter. Where is the line in the sand? We have to keep up with our ever-increasing duties but at the same time, we are told to make sure we take the time to grow professionally!
Ah I don't want to sound like an old pain in the ass, because these things come in fits and spurts for sure. Sometimes we have a bunch of time on our hands and other times we have negative time on our hands and struggle to accomplish what we are doing in the first place. I think what would be good is some type of balance between these two worlds. It might seem like it's naïve to think this could happen but I have hope! Hope is at least one of the last things that we have these days lol.
It's not what I should be doing, but I'm looking forward to the holiday time where we may get things to slow down a little bit.. and we can catch up on the real work and learning things that we are trying to do among all of this.
I'm just glad that I didn't waste my time, money and energy to getting another degree to add on top of all this. I couldn't imagine working on papers and shit while trying to do my work hahaha that would make me crack, plus doing all of the family stuff. Oi vey that gives me heartburn just thinking about it!
