Yesterday I was very shocked all day after I found out that a great professor I had in college had suddenly passed away. From the university they sent an email to all the students and I just couldn't (can't) believe it. He was one of those admirable people for his intelligence and a great professor of economics. He was also a jury member in my final Engineering project: when we asked him if he could evaluate our project, he did not hesitate to help us. I think that life is very unfair sometimes with those who do not deserve it.
So today, like some kind of little tribute, I want to remember a concept of economics that he taught me when I studied his subject and that stuck me: opportunity cost.
Ayer estuve muy conmocionada todo el día después de enterarme que un gran profesor que tuve en la universidad había fallecido de manera repentina. Desde la universidad nos enviaron un mail a todos los alumnos y yo simplemente no lo podía (no lo puedo) creer. Él era de esas personas admirables por su inteligencia y un gran profesor de Economía. También fue jurado en mi trabajo final de Ingeniería: cuando le preguntamos si podía evaluar nuestro proyecto no dudó en ayudarnos. Pienso que la vida es muy injusta a veces con quienes no se lo merecen.
Entonces hoy, como a modo de pequeño homenaje, quiero recordar un concepto de economía que él me enseño cuando cursé su materia y que se me quedó grabado para la vida: costo de oportunidad.
In informal words, he had defined opportunity cost as "what I could be doing but not doing because I am doing something that seems more important to me." The one thing I'm not doing is my opportunity cost.
For example, he told us his own story: when he was young, he worked at a gas station all night to pay for his studies. He said that on the weekends he always saw many young people his age who went to or returned from partying, while he was working. That was his opportunity cost: partying. But he was sacrificing it for something much better: securing a degree in college.
En palabras informales, él había definido el costo de oportunidad como "aquello que podría estar haciendo pero que no hago por estar haciendo algo que me parece más importante". Aquella cosa que no estoy haciendo, es mi costo de oportunidad.
Por ejemplo, él contó su propia historia: cuando era joven, trabajaba en una estación de servicio toda la noche para poder pagar sus estudios. Contó que en los fines de semana siempre veía muchos jovenes de su edad que iban o volvían de estar de fiesta, mientras él estaba trabajando. Ese era su costo de oportunidad: estar de fiesta. Pero lo estaba sacrificando por algo mucho mejor: asegurarse estudios universitarios.
Since then, I haven't stopped seeing the opportunity cost of everything. We are always resigning something to do something better or that interests us more. Sometimes the costs are higher or lower. And that's what life is all about, evaluating all opportunity costs to determine what is best for me.
For example, I could now be wasting my time on any other social network, but instead, I'm investing it here, to write this. In this case, my opportunity cost seems very low to me as I make better profits here at Hive. That is my way of looking at things.
Desde entonces, no he dejado de ver el costo de oportunidad en todo. Siempre estamos resignando algo para hacer algo mejor o que nos interesa más. A veces, los costos son mayores o menores. Y de eso se trata la vida, de evaluar todos los costos de oportunidad para determinar qué me conviene más.
Por ejemplo, yo ahora podría estar perdiendo mi tiempo en cualquier otra red social, pero en lugar de eso, lo estoy invirtiendo aquí, para escribir esto. En este caso, mi costo de oportunidad me parece muy bajo ya que aquí en Hive obtengo mejores beneficios. Esa es mi manera de ver las cosas.
Finally, I want to thank my teacher for teaching me this and many other things about economics. I really regret this loss and my colleagues too. Greetings for him to wherever he is now.
