Working as a volunteer in different hostels in my country has made me meet a lot of people from all over the world. I have met people from countries that I can't even locate on a map yet. The social part of this type of activity is what I like the most, because I was able to learn a lot from other people's experiences. I also like to talk to them about the trips we have made, and while many talk about all the trips they make through South America, until now I had to limit myself to saying that I knew a lot but only about Argentina 😅.
Trabajar como voluntaria en distintos hosteles de mi país me ha hecho cruzarme con un montón de gente de todo el mundo. He conocido personas de países que ni siquiera puedo ubicar bien en el mapa todavía. La parte social que incluye este tipo de actividad es la que más me gusta, porque pude aprender mucho de las experiencias de otras personas. También me gusta hablar con ellos sobre los viajes que hemos hecho, y mientras muchos cuentan de todo el recorrido que hacen por Sudamérica, yo hasta el momento tenía que limitarme a decir que conocía mucho pero solo de Argentina 😅.
The route that travelers usually take when they arrive in Argentina is quite similar for everyone. Most of them choose to visit the most important points along Route 40 from bottom to top, starting with Ushuaia, El Calafate, Bariloche, some of Neuquen and Mendoza to finally reach Salta and continue on to Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Brazil. There are also those who deviate from the route parallel to the mountain range to go east and visit Buenos Aires, the Iguazu Falls in Misiones and sometimes Uruguay and Paraguay. I already know all of these destinations in Argentina from my previous trips, so I can have a topic of conversation when I talk to them about those places 😃.
La ruta que suelen hacer los viajeros que llegan a Argentina es bastante parecida para todos. La mayoría de ellos eligen recorrer los puntos más importantes dentro de la Ruta 40 desde abajo hacia arriba, empezando por Ushuaia, El Calafate, Bariloche, algo de Neuquén y Mendoza para finalmente llegar a Salta y seguir rumbo a Chile, Bolivia, Perú, Colombia, Ecuador y Brasil. Hay quienes también se desvían de la ruta paralela a la cordillera para ir hacia el este y ir a conocer Buenos Aires, las Cataratas del Iguazú en Misiones y en ocasiones Uruguay y Paraguay. Todos esos destinos de Argentina yo ya los conozco de mis viajes anteriores, por lo que puedo tener tema de conversación cuando hablo con ellos sobre esos lugares 😃.
But when they later ask me if I know any of those other countries, the answer is no. Some people are even surprised because, being so close, I have never traveled beyond the borders of my country. Before I started my nomadic journey, I had only been outside Argentina for one afternoon in Paraguay, two afternoons in Brazil, and 24 hours in Uruguay. When I went to Paraguay and Brazil, I did so in the context of visiting the Iguazu Falls with a group tourist package where transportation to these places was included. When I went to Uruguay, I went with my friend on a boat that leaves from Buenos Aires and we returned the next day. I had no experience in traveling abroad, really 😂.
Pero cuando después me preguntan si conozco alguno de esos otros países, la respuesta es no. Incluso algunos se sorprenden porque estando tan cerca nunca he viajado más allá de la frontera de mi país. Hasta antes de empezar mi viaje nómade, solo había estado fuera de Argentina una tarde en Paraguay, dos tardes en Brasil y 24 horas en Uruguay. Cuando fui a Paraguay y Brasil lo hice en contexto de visitar las Cataratas del Iguazú con un paquete turístico grupal en donde el traslado a estos lugares estaba incluido. Cuando fui a Uruguay, fui con mi amiga en un barco que sale desde Buenos Aires y volvimos al otro día. No tenía nada de experiencia en viajes al exterior realmente 😂.
The good thing about visiting those places is that I could cross the country just by showing my ID, without having to have a passport or present a lot of paperwork. Since it was a very short time, I didn't even have to change local money or change my phone number to continue having internet. These experiences were very light and I liked having them, but the truth is that I was always so focused on wanting to see as many places as possible in my country that I had never thought about traveling to a different one 🙃.
Lo bueno que había tenido visitar esos lugares es que con solo presentar mi DNI ya pude cruzar de país, sin necesidad de tener un pasaporte ni presentar gran papelerío. Como fue muy poco tiempo, ni siquiera tuve que cambiar dinero local o cambiar mi número de teléfono para seguir teniendo internet. Estas experiencias fueron muy ligeras y me gustó tenerlas, pero la verdad es que siempre estuve tan concentrada en querer conocer la mayor cantidad posible de lugares en mi país que nunca había pensado en viajar a otro diferente 🙃.
There are three things that worry me when it comes to thinking about traveling abroad: money, safety, and language. Of course, when traveling in Latin America, language is not a problem for me, but if I ever think about crossing the ocean, I know that my English definitely has to improve a lot. As for safety, the idea of traveling alone in an unknown country is something that scares me a lot, and that's why I haven't even considered it until now. Last but not least, I know that if I travel to another country, my budget has to be very different from the one I manage while traveling in Argentina saving a lot of money with the work for accomodation exchanges, so I should have a much larger savings, and that takes something much more valuable: time 🙃.
Tres son las cosas que me preocupan cuando se trata de pensar en viajar afuera: el dinero, la seguridad y el idioma. Por supuesto que para viajar en Latinoamérica el idioma no es un problema para mí, pero si en algún momento pensara en cruzar el oceáno sé que mi inglés definitivamente tiene que mejorar bastante. En cuanto a la seguridad, la idea de estar viajando sola en un país desconocido es algo que me asusta mucho y por eso ni lo he considerado hasta ahora. Último y no menos importante, sé que si viajo a otro país mi presupuesto tiene que ser muy diferente al que manejo mientras viajo en Argentina ahorrando mucho dinero con los intercambios de trabajo por alojamiento, por lo que debería contar con un ahorro muchísimo mayor y eso lleva algo mucho más valioso: tiempo 🙃.
Despite these questions, I am very happy to have traveled so much within my country and I do not regret at all having invested my time here. I think that I still do not dare to go to another country alone; however, a few months ago I met a traveler while I was on vacation in the north of Argentina and we went together to Bolivia (traveling alone: "no, I'm scared", traveling with someone I barely knew: "perfect!" 😂😂😂). Anyway I am very grateful for that crossing in our paths, because if it had not been like that, I would not have known a new country. Or maybe I would, but much later 😅.
A pesar de plantearme estas cuestiones, yo estoy muy conforme con haber viajado tanto dentro de mi país y no me arrepiento para nada de haber invertido mi tiempo acá. Pienso que todavía no me animo a irme sola a otro país; sin embargo, hace unos meses conocí a un viajero mientras yo estaba de paseo en el norte de Argentina y nos fuimos juntos a Bolivia (viajar sola: "no, me da miedo", viajar con alguien que apenas conocía: "¡perfecto!" 😂😂😂). De todos modos estoy muy agradecida por ese cruce en nuestros caminos, porque si no hubiese sido así, no hubiese conocido un país nuevo. O quizás si, pero mucho más adelante 😅.
