Students have enough reason to be livid when the educational system that should work in their favor comes up with plans that do nothing but frustrate them.
I'm supposed to write my last paper today and take a break before the new session begins but that has changed due to the absurdity in the Nigerian educational system. This exam in previous years was written with pen and paper. It was very accommodating and everyone went home happy until the master planners went into their planning room and came out with something very problematic.
When the news got to us that the method for writing GST has changed from handwritten to computer based, we were all happy because we thought it was going to be a lot better and less time consuming plus the rate of malpractice in the university will reduce by at least 5%. But we all thought wrong!
The university has over 15000 students who are to sit for the GST exams and these board of directors had the guts to make it computerized without a good backup plan. It doesn't make any sense because in the whole of the university, there is just one ICT hall with about a hundred computers, and out of this hundred, twenty need repair. More than 1000 students were erroneously scheduled to write the exams on the same day and time which of course has been a cause for commotion.
The students who were to write the exams at 8am yesterday waited in the sun for hours before they were able to push their way into the hall. Most of them ended up not writing, a great number of students returned home frustrated, they lost their footwear due to the back and forth movements of the day.
Some who felt the need to protest did so but I guess their voices didn't go beyond their heads because the Directorate of Student Affairs cares only about what's on his mind. There's no room for anything related to the opinion of the students as it affects them.
My exams scheduled for today have been rescheduled because these people couldn't come up with a plan that would work for everyone's benefit. I couldn't be more pained.
