One of the severe problems that requires our attention is gun violence. Obviously, it is easier to do more harm with a gun nearby. This is not a connection we really can afford to ignore anymore.
Day in and day out, we are all overwhelmed with news of another shooting. It's heartbreaking and even very scary. People have lost their lives, and families have been torn apart. Availability of guns seems to be the common thread in this tragedy. Were guns not so easily available, maybe we might have fewer tragedies like these.
Now, removing guns from people may sound extreme, but let me tell you this: fewer guns translate to fewer acts of violence. Many countries that have the most rigorous gun control laws in the world really show very low rates of deaths related to guns. They have shown that it is possible to reduce cases of gun violence by making it hard for people to get guns.
There is also the problem of accidents: scores of people get injured or killed from accidental shootings every year. Children find guns at home, and inquisitive minds do what they will. Take guns away from people, and all these avoidable accidents can be avoided, thereby making our communities much safer.
Some may say that people will simply find another way. True, but guns make it much easier to inflict serious damage quickly. Therefore, reducing the number of guns in circulation can at least delay these acts of violence a little bit, giving time for law enforcement to respond.
It's high time that we really stand up and say it, safety does come before the right to a gun. Our lives are worth more than any archaic notion that everyone needs to walk around with a gun on them for protection. Other ways of safety exist without jeopardizing the lives of other innocents in the process.
Zero in on those solutions that work. Taking the guns away from people can spare lives and can make a society safer for all of us. It's time we make a change and bring an end to this senseless violence that has haunted us for far too long.
