Spoiled internet users
I can complain and say what I want about Budapest, but there's one thing that has been very consistent: the stable and fast internet connection. I also read that before we left Spain at the time and that the coverage there is very good. I can only confirm that this is truly the case! We had a few issues at the start of the second wave of the pandemic where we just moved into our other place and suddenly the internet stopped working for half of a day, thankfully, my boyfriend could still head into the office to solve that matter. It was mostly annoying for me and only happened a few times. Other than that, everything was super fast and working smoothly most of the time.
I forgot about the slow internet in Spain
When I saw plenty of fiber options available online here in Spain, I honestly didn't think the internet was going to be an issue here, especially not in AirBNB's. Upon arrival in our first apartment, we discovered an internet connection of 1mbs. Ouch! This would mean trouble for work, especially for my boyfriend. No matter what he tried, the connection was too slow for everything. I informed the host of the apartment and he was very responsive thankfully. He said it should be about 12mbs, still slow but at least 12x better than what it was now. He asked us to restart etc, you know the usual stuff an IT guy like my boyfriend does before contacting someone about it, but what did he know lol. We walked through the steps again just in case and then informed him there was no improvement.
Portable connection
He let us know that he will arrange fiber internet and meanwhile his wife would bring us a portable router with a sim so that hopefully we have a bit faster internet. That's great at least he's trying to solve the issue as far as he can. Most days were okay-ish enough to properly work, until a few days ago when there seemed to be a HUGE amount of dust/sand/other stuff in the sky to the point that we could not even see the sea anymore. It was as if someone erased it from our view, and on the right side, the sky had a huge red-ish line in it as if there was a lot of pollution. We checked the weather forecast and exactly at that point on our right it said that the sky was indeed polluted much more to the point where it was marked red instead of yellow/orange here.
These types of internet connections
Are so slow that it should be illegal with so many people working from home nowadays. Of course, it's good to slow down from time to time, and this definitely made us do so but some work just can't wait and meetings often can't either. I know that I don't have the patience left for this speed and I know for sure that we will install fiber internet once we can in our own apartment as soon as we have it..
Changes in our plans
I have managed to book an extra option for the third temporary apartment because I'm not convinced that the other people have a connection good enough. They seem like a bit older people not really aware of the speed some people require for work. We know one thing for sure, next week when we move to the second apartment, we have fast internet, as we will pay extra for it on request.
Do you ever encounter these issues with the internet where you live? And is this often or are you spoiled like we are and instantly thrown off guard when it happens? I'm seriously not the person to sit down and wait until it's over haha, but what to do? Thankfully we have a very beautiful environment to enjoy so that truly helps while hoping for the best.
