However, I found old photos in my files of a very famous shopping store in Graz, called "Kastner & Öhler", I thought I could show you. But then I looked in the web, just wanted to know, when this comany was founded and stept into some very interesting details, also a little bit of Austria's History, I decided to tell you about.
Kastner & Öhler is a company that was founded 1873 in the Czech Republic (at this time part of Austrian-Hungarian Empire).
Shortly later in 1883, the first big department store was founded in Graz.
Until 1885 it was not common to have fixed prices in stores (did you ever think about that? unbelievable isnt it?), these were introduced at that time. The fixed prices were the basis for a revolutionary idea at that time: The mail order business!
In 1887, Kastner & Öhler was one of the first European companies that started a mail order business, sending multilingual catalogs throughout the Danube Monarchy. (Austria)
In 1894, the first real department store of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was built with a spectacular construction of the "Little Hall".
But the success story continues. Few years later in 1912/1913, there was another new building at this same place. The architects Fellner & Helmer (Graz Opera) planned the building with everything the modern world of that time had to offer: customer lifts, ventilation system, in-house electricity system, pneumatic tube system and refreshment room with music.
The centerpiece of this new building was the "Great Hall," a richly decorated and adorned ceremonial room with a colorful glass dome.
In 1939, when Austria was annexed to Germany, a forced expropriation was averted by selling the company to the sons-in-law.
The old owners had to flee, one of them, Franz Öhler, died in the concentration camp Buchenwald in 1945. But the company survived these dark years and in 1945 the 3rd generation of entrepreneurs started anew!
In 1959, the first escalator in Styria was put into operation.
In 1973, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the company, there came a new logo for the company. The lion of the Polish artists Grabianski & Jablonski:

Starting around this time, I can tell you personally what it was like to shop at Kastner & Öhler, because I was 5 years old when the "Lion" was born.
This lion as a logo shaped the feeling of "shopping" for us Grazers for many decades. First he was on orange ground, later he became in beige on brown colors.
In the shopping building, when I was a child, there were the escalators, but the beautiful ornaments had all disappeared behind drab coverings at that time. 70s just. It was rather gloomy and cramped there. Nevertheless, it was always a very special event when you went "to the Kastner" to shop - and that didn't happen so often back then.
I think the Kastner & Öhler canteen was also the first one I ever saw. At Christmas time, it was packed with people, all in a buying frenzy.
The main building and the facade were redesigned in the 90s by our hometowns architects Szyszkowitz & Kowalski and became much more "open".
For me, however, the big "boom" was the redesign in 2010. The Spanish architects Fuensanta Nieto & Enrique Sobejano had won a competition. And in my opinion, they succeeded in creating a work of art. Top modern and at the same time combined with the old elements from the 19th century. Thus, not only shopping, but also looking at this builing is worth a visit.
The highlight, the beautiful columns decorated with gold stucco, the hall opend up to the light top of the building, where you find a coffee house on the top floor with a terrace that allows a view over the roofs of the old town of Graz.

Ich muss zugeben, als ich heute die vielen schönen Beiträge zum Marketfriday von Dswigle gesehen habe, wurde ich ein kleine wenig neidisch. Während Österreich im Lockdown ist, scheinen die Menschen überall sonst auf der Welt Weihnachtsmärkte und Shopping Erlebnisse zu genießen.
Ich habe allerdings ein paar alte Fotos von einem sehr berühmten Kaufhaus in Graz gefunden, dem Kastner & Öhler. Als ich nur mal schnell nachsehen wollte, wann das Kaufhaus gegründet wurde, habe ich ein paar sehr interessante geschichtliche Informationen gefunden.
Kastner & Öhler ist eine Firma, die ursprünglich 1873 in Tschechien (damals Österreich-Ungarische Monarchie) gegründet wurde. Kurz später in 1883 wurde das erste große Verkaufshaus in Graz gegründet
Bis 1885 war es nicht üblich, in Geschäften feste Preise zu haben (unvorstellbar oder? die wahre Bedeutung von "Handel"!), diese wurden damals erst eingeführt. Die festen Preise waren die Grundlage für eine damals revolutionäre Idee:

1887 startet Kastner & Öhler als eines der ersten europäischen Unternehmen einen Versandhandel und verschickt mehrsprachige Katalog in die gesamte Donaumonarchie. (Österreich)
1894 mit einem spektakulären Bau der "Kleinen Halle" entsteht das erste richtige Warenhaus der K.u.K. Monarchie.
Doch die Erfolgsgeschichte geht weiter. Schon im Jahr 1912/1913 gibt es wieder einen Neubau. Die Architekten Fellner & Helmer (Grazer Oper) planen das Gebäude mit allem, was die damalige moderne Welt herzugeben hatte: Kundenlifte, Lüftungsanlage, Eigenstromanlage, Rohrpostanlage und Erfrischungsraum mit Musik.
Das Herzstück dieses Neubaus war die „Große Halle“, ein reich verzierter und geschmückter Prachtraum, über mehrere Stockwerke mit einer bunten Glaskuppel.
1939 beim Anschluß Österreichs an das Deutsche Reich wurde eine Zwangsenteignung abgewendet, indem man die Firma an die Schwiegersöhne verkaufte.
Die damaligen Besitzer mussten fliehen, einer von ihnen, Franz Öhler, stirbt 1945 im Konzentrationslager Buchenwald.
Doch die Firma überstand auch diese dunklen Jahre und 1945 startete die 3. Unternehmergeneration neu durch!
1959 wird die erste Rolltreppe der Steiermark in Betrieb genommen.
1973 zum 100-Jährige Firmenjubiläum gibt es ein neues Logo für die Firma. Der Löwe der polnischen Künstlern Grabianski & Jablonski:

Und ab in etwa dieser Zeit kann ich euch persönlich davon berichten, wie es war bei Kastner & Öhler einzukaufen, denn als der Löwe geboren wurde war ich doch immerhin schon 5 Jahre alt.
Dieser Löwe als Logo prägte über viele Jahrzehnte das Gefühl "zu shoppen" für uns Grazer. Zuerst war er auf orangem Hintergrund, an großen Einkaufstagen war die Stadt voll von orangen Kastner Sackerln (Tüten) und später wurde er beige auf braunem Hintergrund umgestaltet.
Als ich ein Kind war gab es natürich die Rolltreppen, ich meine mich dunkel daran zu erinnern, dass die damals etwas ganz besonderes und neues waren.
Die schönen Ornamente waren allerdings zu dieser Zeit alle hinter eintönigen Verkleidungen verschwunden. 70er Jahre eben. Es war eher düster und eng dort. Dennoch war es immer wieder ein ganz besonderes Ereignis, wenn man - und das kam damals ja nicht so oft vor - "zum Kastner" zum einkaufen ging.
Ich denke, die Kantine von Kastner & Öhler war auch die erste, die ich jemals gesehen habe. Zur Weihnachtszeit gerammelt voll mit Menschen, alle im Kaufrausch.
Es gab dann immer wieder kleinere Umbauten, Haupthaus und Fassade wurde in den 90er von den heimischen Architekten Szyszkowitz & Kowalski neu und schon viel "offener" gestaltelt.
Für mich der große "Boom" aber war die Neugestaltung in 2010. Die spanischen Architekten Fuensanta Nieto & Enrique Sobejano hatten einen Wettbewerb gewonnen. Und meiner Meinung nach ist ihnen ein Kunstwerk gelungen. Top modern und zugleich mit den alten Elementen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert kombiniert. Damit ist nicht nur das Shoppen, sondern auch allein die Räumlichkeiten einen Besuch wert.
Das Highlight, die schönen mit Goldstuck verzierten Säulen, die große Halle mit offenem Blick nach oben und ein Kaffeehaus im obersten Stock mit einer Terrasse, die den Blick über die Dächer der Grazer Altstadt ermöglicht.
Ach, ich würde so gerne für euch hingehen und neue aktuelle Fotos aufnehmen, aber leider darf ich nicht. Ich hoffe ich kann es bald einmal nachholen. Die von mir aufgenommen Fotos stammen aus dem Jahr 2012, kurz nach der Neugestaltung.
