Yes, markets are naturally loud and noisy BUT this unique market in our countryside which I am about to share with you today is the market that literally S.C.R.E.A.M.S and comes to the neighborhood every quiet first light in the morning. (What a unique alarm clock!)
In our place in the countryside, just as the rising sun casts a rosy hue across the morning sky, and where everything is still gentle and quiet, is also the time we can hear a scream passing by slowly on the road. It may sound like a disturbance but this is the most awaited scream by the neighborhood almost every day. So what is this scream and why this always comes to the neighborhood every day?
Good day, beautiful people of #FridayMarket Community,y and to the lovely who initiated this wonderful community of market lovers all over the world. Today I'm sharing this unusual market we have in the province in which noise echoed in the streets yet made us save a penny and our buying fast and convenient.
Unlocking local terms:
Isda = fish
Lab-as=fresh
I checked both sides of the road to confirm that I didn't miss what I was looking for. Our house is a 2-minute away (Sorry, I'm not good at a distance) from the street and is situated on top of the hill. We didn't have something to cook for breakfast (out of stock) so I made sure to wake up early so I could go to the street and wait for this unique market that screams. Hehe.
What are they and Who are they?
"IsdaaAA!!!! Lab-aaSS!!!
FisshHH!!!! Still FresshHH!!!!",
the endless screams of the vendors.
They are diligent and hardworking Fish Vendors selling the fish they freshly import from the local fishermen at the port. They sell the fish to the neighborhood they passed on the road. Driving their motorbike at a snail-like speed, they also scream their voice out loud repeatedly "IsdaaaaAAA!!!(Fish)" for the nth time!
Their screams signal the whole neighborhood that a random fish vendor is coming and that we have to prepare and run to the street so we could buy the fresh fish! I didn't want to come late and miss the fish vendor so I went to the street early.
THE BUYING PART
IsssdaaaaAAAAAA!!!!!!! (Fish!), a scream I heard after a couple of minutes. Finally, a fish vendor is coming! I shouted back "Isdaaaa!"! Yeah, this is the catch. If you want to buy, you have to shout back, so vendors will know that you will buy a fish. If not, they will skip you and continue driving. Well, other drivers are good at spotting their customers standing beside the street, so the customers must not need to shout.
Manong, the vendor, parked his motorbike beside the street and fixed his weighing scale after. I noticed he has two empty pails and two buckets with him. I excitedly asked him what fish he sells.
He only sells two types of fish of him that day the anchovy and the Caraballas fish. Perfect! My daughter loves Caraballas Fish.
The Caraballas Fish costs 230Peso/kilo (4.01$).
I asked for half a kilo only since I only bought my coins with me. But when I counted my coins, I only had 100peso coins in all. So instead of buying half a kilo which is 115peso. I bought a fish worth 100peso only.
Manong was happy to receive my payment, he said it would be easier for him to give a change to his customers.
As soon as he received my payment and I got the fish, he immediately packed his thing so that he could continue selling his fish.
And now that I have the fish with me, it's time to prepare and cook for breakfast!
This unusual market in the province has existed for a long-long time ago. Fish vendors who sell the fish, go to ports as early as dawn to purchase the fish in bulk. They have options of fish to buy and sell, but most of the time, they only choose the fish that is affordable in the neighborhood.
Therefore, fish vendors who passed in the neighborhood have different fishes to sell. The neighborhood can choose and wait for the next vendor if they don't like the first one.
We are very thankful for the presence of these vendors because they make our buying convenient and less expensive. There is no need to go for us to the big markets as we have this Market that screams and comes to our houses.
That's all for this unique market of ours.
