If you want a new outfit, where do you go? Well, if you were a horse, you would go to a saddlery, also known as a tack shop. Everything you could ever think of for a horse. If you own a horse or three, they are fun stores to walk through, even if you buy nothing. I would compare it to a toy store for kids. Mine never needed to buy it, just looking was enough for their enjoyment.
Breeches, boots, helmets, saddle, saddle pad, halter, bit, reins... the proper equipment is endless. Or seemingly so. Truth be told, unless you are riding in a competition or s horse show, you can dress however you want. Bareback too, I let the horses dress down too.
Horse tack is the term my family uses when referring to the equipment we use, the riding gear. I tack up when getting ready to ride a horse.
The Saddlery Liquidators is a great place to shop for equipment. It has new and used, a real bonus as it comes at a steep price to purchase equipment. I am fortunate that I have an uncle that is a horse trainer/breeder and has always given me new equipment (and used) that is no longer useful to him. This has been a real money-saver! One trip through any tack shop is likely to make your heart stop. To be fair, we have more equipment than is actually needed, especially when the price is right.
I bought shampoo the last time I went to the tack shop. I did a quick comparison of brands before I got there. for the price of $19.73 for 12oz or $172.00 for a gallon, I chose DermaBenSs Horse Shampoo because it was safe for dogs, cats, and horses. Bingo! I can use it for all three. Moisturizes and restores dry skin, something one of the horse has a sometimes problem with, plus it has no real smell. Bonus. I always read the directions on products, instead of investigating why it doesn't work as advertised. It is easiest when you are bathing your horse to use a soapy sponge on the coat you have already wet down. I add the shampoo to the bucket of water and use a small circle pattern to wash them. I don't wash them all the time, and hardly ever in the winter unless they are in a show.
On another note, in between shampoos, I use Mane ‘N Tail Pet Shampoo, the best value for the money. It comes in a 32oz bottle for $14.99 and lathers nicely. The downside is that it doesn't last long. It uses more shampoo than other brands. By the way, if you run out of your own shampoo, it works well for human hair... Just saying.
They carry a large selection of new and used saddles in both English and Western and everything for the Polo Ponies. In the heart of horse country, it is never unusual to see people riding through the National Parks here, even in downtown Washington, DC there is a horse stable where you can ride a horse in Rock Creek Park. they take their equine seriously here.
I looked at a saddle that was being consigned, which is when a person sells an item through the store. It is in the store and when sold, the seller gets a percentage of the price it is sold for. When a price is put on the item the basic rule of thumb in consignment is to price the item 25% – 40% of the original price that was paid. When we are talking saddles, many times, they are hardly worn.
I was looking at a saddle that was barely worn. Pinnacle Kirkby Close Contact Saddle... Nice leather on it. $1300.00! It will make a nice saddle for someone, even brand new, there is no breaking in. This close-contact saddle, in particular, creates a closer feel to your horse.
Aisles of reins! The reins are what you use to drive and steer the horse. Finding the proper rein is important. Find a length that will help you ride on a loose rein with a relaxed hand. Reins come in a variety of lengths, typically 48" for ponies, 52" for cobs or small horses, 54" for average-sized horses, and 60" for oversize horses. Dover Saddlery
English: $20.00-$250.00+ The type of reins you buy are based on the type of riding you do. I am doing English for this purpose. I found a nice set for $129.00 I'll keep that in mind. I am pretty sure we are broke by now, so we will end this little adventure and see what is out there in the #MarketFriday markets. I hope you left me some good ones!
