Dry Fish
Dry fish is very much full of protein. It is called here in Bangladesh as the protein of the poor. The main reason behind this is its comparatively cheap price. Those who don't have enough money to buy some fish, dry fish is very much suitable for them. Here in today's Market Friday challenge I am going to share dry fish shopping from a nearby market. I shall try to explain in detail about dry fish and its related issues in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is in 4th position in the world in the production of sweet water fish. So here we can find a huge number of fish for consumption and for the export as well. What's the main problem behind this is supply chain management. Most of the fishes are caught on the coastal areas in terms of sea water fish and for the sweet water fish, it”s just caught and cultivated in the rural areas of Bangladesh. When a good number of Fish is caught in a day then it is difficult for the producer or the fishermen to sell it immediately. So, in that case, they use this technique of drying fish into the sunlight so that their fish cannot be spoiled. If they could got a good supply chain and demand of their fish in the market, they could sell it at good price but when fails they try to convert this fish into dry fishes so that it can be sold later by having some time at hand.
This is very common phenomenon but there are some other fisherman's who catch fish for drying only. And there is a huge demand of this dry fish throughout the country as well. There are mainly two group of people in production of dry fishes. One group is Catching fish for selling when they fail due to the demand and supply gap for the supply chain management system and they basically try to avoid their fish being spoiled. On the other hand, second group are basically doing this dry fish making for their routine work.
There are a huge number of people involved in this fish marketing, trading and fish related activities. In this sector, huge employment has been created here in Bangladesh. That's great. Dry fishes you can see in the picture are available almost each and every market of the rural area or even some city areas.
Dry fish recipes are very much versatile. It can be cooked with several ingredients like vegetables from every season of the year. That’s the main reason of the demand of this dry fish and another reason is I have explained earlier that the cheapness. The poor can fulfill their protein needs through this dry fishes. Most of the people like dry fish but there are a few people obviously who don't like to have this dry fishes in their meal.
According to Bangladesh related website Banglapedia,
Loitya (Harpodon neherius), Chhuri (Lepturacanthus savala), Punti (Puntius sarana, P. stigma), chapila (Gadusia chapra), Lakhua (Polynemus indicus), Rupchanda (Pampus chinensis), and shrimps (Metapenaeus species and Penaeus species) are the common dry fishes here in Bangladesh.

But most of these are the Costly dry fishes. But whatever you are watching in my photographs today are cheap most dry fishes. Loitya, chapila, Shrimp, Powa, Kaski, Moliya, Churi etc seen in the picture but I have bought three of those for today's market shopping. These are Loitya, Chapila and Powa.
Couple of days back I have collected some vegetables from my village home while coming back from the village to the city area. For making meal with those vegetables dry fish is very much essential that's why I have bought three categories of dry fish today. If I mention about the price it is not of high price and compared with the normal situation it's little bit higher but you very much reasonable. Sometimes when the production is slow, the price of dry fishes increases but in general, the prices of the dry fishes are very much stable and comparatively low with the fishes. That's why it's the choice of the poor. I have bought 250 grams of each of three categories and it costs about 5 USD. Three categories price was very much close. Overall price of each categories is about only 6-10 USD per kilogram. In this context I am satisfied with the price.
Finally, I want to share the name of the market and location. The name of the market is Zorargonj, Mirsarai, Chittagong, Bangladesh which is just 5 minutes walking distance from my official home. That's why, I regularly go to this market for shopping but in this current situation of COVID 19 normally once or twice a week I go to the market for shopping but previously I went there for 4/5 times in a week. As my family members also love these dry fishes and its recipe as well, that's why I regularly bought some dry fishes. I have some idea on this. That's why I tried to explain something from my experience and knowledge to this community through this #MarketFriday challenge.
