Today was wet Market Friday for me but more so because I accompanied my friend who had some marketing to do, after which we had plans to meet up with another friend for breakfast.
The only thing I bought, red and green chillies (RM2 each). Even though I told the woman to put them in one plastic bag, she put them in two and then grabbed a bigger one to put the smaller bags in. I managed to stop her in time to just hand over the two bags. And while my friend chose her vegetables for the week, I parked myself in a corner and tried to take as many shots without moving and getting in the way of the shoppers.
Snake gourd can be added to lentil curry or just stir-fried. One of the reasons why I love doing Market Friday is because, after taking the pictures, I search up stuff to say about the pic and I myself learn some interesting things. Apparently, it is a member of the pumpkin family and I was under the impression it was in the cucumber group. Then I thought, better check up on the cucumbers in case it is also in the pumpkin group. But nooooo. The cucumber is in the "gourd" group. π
Bottle gourd. Confession, I have never cooked this and had to check with my friend for its name. And according to Wiki, "young, you can eat it as veggie but if you let it mature, it can be dried and used as a utensil". I have seen the dried matured gourds sold in the smaller towns as decoration.
White radish. Compared to all the different ways of cooking it, adding it to lentil curry is the best way because it soaks up the flavour. It also gives you gas, and imagine with lentils - that's a double whammy but too yummy to say no to haha
The first time I tried Beetroot was on a ship as part of a salad. I fell in love with the taste. I just haven't tried cooking it myself and I am going to change that narrative.
Bitter Gourd, so good for your but oh so bitter. I only like eating it deep-fried but that may actually offset the benefits. I remember, this one time we had gone out to a Chinese restaurant, and each of us got to order one dish. Because we always choose the same menu, we tried to be adventurous and order something different. Dad ordered stir-fried bitter gourd. Let's just say it wasn't great π¬
After marketing, we met up with our friend for breakfast, and this was brekkie. Upma, which is a very dense porridge of roasted semolina and spices.
And that wrapped my trip to the market. It was a good catch up with friends, something that doesn't happen very often because of the restrictions. And yes, we followed all SOPs stringently - RM1,000 to RM10,000 is a hefty fineπ
Thank you for reading,
Till next time, Carpe Diem!
