How about setting up an online store that turns decluttering into a thriving little side hustle?
If you're really ambitious and have time to scour thrift stores for dusty, forlorn second-hand treasures, crying out for someone to give them a new lease on life, and once again taking pride of place in someone's home, your side-hustle could soon turn into a thriving business!
Tired of your old wardrobe, or worse still, you've outgrown last season's favourites?
You can also turn them into hard cash which you in turn can use to get yourself a wardrobe makeover with designer labels at a fraction of the original cost, sometimes still brand new with labels still on!
I'm no snob and really do not need to go to a Gucci or Le Creuset store if I can buy something at more than half the price from my favourite online thrift store!
Or use your Yaga earnings to boost that ever-increasing budget.
I'm talking of a local online store called YAGA which currently boast 546 004 users, 666 832 items sold, and a rating of 4.4 on hellopeter.com!
Setting up a store is super easy, with no costs involved, and no risk of thugs knocking on your door pretending to be a buyer, as has happened to many South Africans. Or the boot could be on the other foot, where you get scammed when you pay for goods that turns out to be nothing like the photographs.
I hear some ask the question:
What's the catch?
The answer is, there is no catch, it's a win-win situation for sellers and buyers.
Yaga only charges a 9% commission fee from sales and handles all payments. The buyer pays for the postage which is added to the selling price.
You register your shop online, Yaga will tell you if there already is a shop with the same name.
You can even do this on your cell phone by downloading the Yaga App.
Once you've set up your shop with a catchy name, image, and shop description, you're ready to begin stocking up your shop.
Upload 3 photos, choose from one of the many categories, describe your product and its condition - from brand-new to fully pre-loved with flaws which you have to describe, add your price, and you're on your way.
A peek into MisThrift.
As we're looking at downsizing in the not too distant future, I've started decluttering, found some really nice stuff but I never use them, I'd even forgotten about some! I really would love to see these go to a home where they will be appreciated and already made a good number of sales.
Some sold Items
Stock waiting for a new home, some already have a number of likes, so they're sure to go soon.
How does Yaga work?
- Seller lists an item for sale
- Buyer buys an item & chooses a shipping method
- Yaga holds payment securely
- Seller ships item
- Buyer receives item & marks it as collected.
- Seller receives payment which is released into the seller's Yaga wallet, which can be drawn into your bank account, or used to purchase something on Yaga.
PUDO - Pick Up Drop Off
For shipping, I use an App called PUDO - super speedy, and reliable.
These are locker boxes set up in many suburbs, no waiting in queues, as a code is sent once you've booked the correct size locker, drop-off and pick-up location on the PUDO App, you enter the code, locker door opens, you deposit the parcel, ensure the door is closed, and you're done. You can track the parcel through The Courier Guy, so the buyer cannot pretend they have not collected.
MisThrift
I was really fortunate as my son's girlfriend handed her store over to me, with its catchy name, and much of her remaining stock as well. Most of it is still sitting boxed up in my younger son's flat, as things have been crazy around here with hubby needing new plumbing to his heart.
He's doing very well, by the way :)
Andi sold a ton of stuff, and when they emigrated, buyers were spoilt for choice, as she loved collecting and revamping/repurposing gems she found in charity stores, but also sold really good quality homeware.
I'm looking forward to the treasure hunt when those boxes find their way here, but for now I'm being firm with myself, if I have not used something in a long while, it goes to my Yaga store!
The bonus is that I now have a ton of cupboard space, am discovering some treasured keepsakes that I've been searching for, and my little Yaga kitty is slowly but surely growing!
I hope some of my #hivesouthafrica friends have found some inspiration in my very different #marketfriday post, as this is something anyone can do as a way of supplementing income with their 'vintage' goods!
I also hope you all enjoyed a peek at some of the goods in my store, even though many are already sold.
Dear Denise is still sailing the high seas, I think?
