Less Fancier but More Lively Shopping Experience in Yogyakarta
Two months ago, I visited Teras Malioboro 1, a renewed shopping destination in Yogyakarta, located on Malioboro street. In that market, the shopping experience was different from the previous experience where the sellers were selling their goods on the road side.
But since the relocation, they are split into two, Teras Malioboro 1 and Teras Malioboro 2. Their location is further apart, Teras Malioboro 2 located 20 minutes walk from Teras Malioboro 1. The place itself is less fancier than the 1st one but it has the crowded feel and even more lively experience than window shopping at Teras Malioboro 1.
Teras Malioboro 2 has a street market setting, while Teras Malioboro 1 is located in a building. Teras Malioboro 2 offers more outdoor space, with food courts located in the back of the street market and in an open area. This provides a different shopping experience compared to Teras Malioboro 1, which is more indoor and enclosed. The goods that are sold are also slightly different from Teras Malioboro 1, it is more varied and more interesting to look at.
When I was visiting with my mom, we saw that the place was even busier than the first one. We went there at night and even that doesn’t stop people from either haggling or window shopping.
There are many rows to explore at Teras Malioboro 2, and while my mom and I were searching for a necklace, we also checked out the affordable dresses and fashion accessories being sold in the area. Cheap does not necessarily mean low quality at Teras Malioboro 2. In fact, the clothing we purchased in Malioboro has proven to be long-lasting; I still have a piece from my childhood that fits me and has maintained its print quality. Can you imagine that? So, though the place has moved, I believe the quality is still there.
Learn How To Negotiate
Unlike Teras Malioboro 1, which only has three floors, Teras Malioboro 2 has many more vendors, and I was too exhausted to explore them all. The sellers are friendly and love to haggle with customers, making it a favorite destination for a serial hagglers.
As I walked through the market, I overheard a conversation between sellers about a customer who was particularly skilled at haggling. I can imagine this place to be an interesting battlefield between them.
What always intrigued me is that there are no hard feelings in this market. You can yell, haggle fiercely, leave the place and that’s about it.
Teras Malioboro 2 is definitely a great place to also learn about negotiation skills. It just takes patience and the knowledge that there may be better deals available at other stalls.
The half price technique may also not work in this place. So, you have to really talk, and find the best deal instead of just doing half price technique. Most of the goods here are also sold under $5 and that’s a good price already.
my mom and I love visiting markets like this. She loves it more than I do but in places like this, I tend to observe and practice my negotiation skills. Sometimes, we don’t really buy things especially for me who doesn’t really like shopping. The only thing I like is that I enjoy lively interaction. Though this time, we’re going with a reason. We need to get some gifts for my mom’s friend and also dress for my grandma.
So, we're looking for jewellery craft seller and found this small stalls with various necklace. My mom was smitten with the necklace so, we decided to stop and browse through it.
My mom was wondering which necklace would look better and since they didn't have mirror, I took a picture and showed her the result.
We did not haggle much because it was pretty much a fixed price. We only got a small discount but was satisfied with it. We had to circle the place a couple of times and comparing the price and found out that it was the best deal we can get. So, we went back to this small stall and purchased a few of it.
Unique Finds
While wandering through the market, I came across a vendor selling keychains in various shapes. I was curious if they also sold phallus-shaped ones , but to my surprise, the most unusual items for sale were chicken- and severed finger-shaped keychains. These items looked very realistic, and I couldn't help but wonder who would want to buy them. Do you want to get one of these?
I am not going to lie, that chicken makes me want to bite it haha
There is also an artwork made from leather like you can see below.
Food To Try
Much like Teras Malioboro 1, they also provide an eating space. Although unlike Teras Malioboro 1, it is more open too. There are many vendors selling fried chicken which is the signature of this city. When I was there, it was bustling and people were having late dinner meal. If you're not accustomed to sit on the floor then it's going to be a problem. Although from what I observe, people love this setting because they can casually chat with their family or friends and share a laughter while having a humble meal. I asked my mom to eat there but she wanted to eat at home.
After a bit of consideration and enjoying the breeze from this area, we decided to head back to Starbucks area to get home. It was an easy pick-up point because it is mostly recognizable than other shops around the area. So, we walked out but on our way, I spotted many ladies with something in the skewers and a grill.
Sate Uritan
Among those ladies, one lady without many customer intrigued me. So, I picked her than the other 5 in the street. It was my first time trying a local delicacy called Sate Uritan. My mom explained to me that it is made from the yolk of an unborn chicken and reproductive organ of a chicken. This was a disturbing concept for me, but it is apparently famous as I saw many people were eating it and my mom even told me so.
The yellow part tastes similar to egg yolk, but it is much softer. I purchased four of these skewers for about $0.90, and a set of ten, or a portion, would have cost around $1.60. Although the flavor was interesting, the thought of where this delicacy came from grossed me out, and I don't think I will try it again. My mom who tried it in the past, did not want to eat it again. Despite all of that, I would still recommend trying it for the sake of experiencing a unique local delicacy.
As I always believe, sometimes exploring our own city like a tourist will enable us to see or try things we haven't tried. Like this time, though I have lived in this city for many years, explored the area many times, but it was my first time trying this local delicacies.
