Hi friends, today we are going to buy tickets for the suburban train at the train station in Krasnoye Selo. It's a simple purchase, it will only take a couple of minutes. But on the way we can take a little excursion for ourselves.
Krasnoye Selo Station. 1910-1914
The first railway station at Krasnoye Selo was built in the mid-19th century. This station was built by architect Nikolai Benois in pseudo-gothic style. Architect Nicolai Benoit liked this architectural style and worked in it a lot. The most famous Gothic station, built by this architect, is located near Krasnoye Selo, in Peterhof. Unfortunately the old railway station in Krasnoye Selo has not survived, it was destroyed during the Second World War.
The new building was erected in the 1950s. The style of this building is neoclassicism. Strict geometric shapes and a simple but distinctive design are the hallmarks of this style. The use of round and semi-circular elements was a highlight of the building. The entrance to the station is on the opposite side of the building. I have to walk up the platform to get inside.
From the central hall I went left into the waiting room. Usually the benches in the waiting rooms stand in slender rows in the centre, but here I saw a different arrangement. The benches were placed opposite the tall windows, which had a nice view of the park.
The waiting room is quite large, but those windows make it feel light and airy. The ceiling of the room deserves special attention.
From the waiting room I returned to the central hall. It's another hall where you should definitely look up - there's a circular dome above the hall.
Downstairs there are ticket offices, ticket vending machines, a paper train timetable and an electronic scoreboard showing the nearest flights. The ticket from Krasnoye Selo to St. Petersburg costs 56 roubles ($0.70).
The time was still quite early, the weather was fine and I thought I had no hurry. The ticket would be valid for the whole day - nothing prevented me from skipping the train and taking the next one, but in the meantime I could take a walk in the park near the station. There is an old park and lakes next to the station. I was so keen on walking that I almost missed the next train too.
