Welcome back again guys to our weekly digest from the science and technology space. I hope we're all feeling great, I think I am. Looks like we enjoyed my previous post on invisibility, don't worry, more interesting posts like that to come. However today, we shall continue with the usual, so sit back relax and enjoy. 😉
Edible Electronics – Scientists Have Developed the First-Ever Rechargeable Battery Made Out of Food
So, imagine your little child playing with a toy which happens to be an electronic device and in the process puts the toy in his/her mouth. 😳
Yeah, don't look at me like that, most of us, if not all behaved that way when we were very little, though not necessarily with electronic devices. I can still remember few of the very weird ones i did but i still don't get why we behave that way. If such child is not carefully monitored he/she could swallow something that could be hazardous to his/her health. Electronic toys are very fascinating but the conventional ones are made from materials that when some of it's components are ingested by a child could do more harm. For quite some time now, there have been research on what is called "edible electronics" - electronic devices whose components are made from consumable materials, instead of doing harm, they could also give you nutrients. In this report and for the first time, an edible rechargeable battery has been invented - wow. Apart from keeping a child safe, such kind of electronic device has other important potential uses and if you wish to know more, then keep reading. Welcome to the green future amigos. 😎
Quantum liquid becomes solid when heated
When you heat ice it becomes liquid water, likewise most solid substances. In other words, most solids become liquid as they get heated and follows a reverse process (liquid to solid) when cooled. Well, this is what we observe in the classical world - our everyday experience. What about a liquid becoming a solid when heated ?
It's like boiling water in your kitchen and you observed the water turning to ice. 😳
Could this really happen in our reality ?
Yes and thanks to quantum physics but keep reading to find out more.
Solar sails could guide interplanetary travel, says new study (Update)
There seems to be two general ways of moving an object/a vehicle from one point in space to another. One way is through an internal engine like in the case of cars, airplanes and ships. The other kind is what i may have to call external engine - if that's the right word to use, this involves exploiting power directly from external agents like the wind. Examples includes gliders(air) and sailboats. This second way is generally referred to as "sailing" and it's more easier and less expensive to build. Since we began our journey beyond our planet we've been making use of mostly the first way (internal engine) in our space vehicles, though such way is actually necessary for lift off to outer space. Where sailing would be important in our space journey would be after we've left our planet's gravitational influence and it's mainly because of the limited energy supply from the internal engines, if one happens to travel a very long journey in outer space. What would you do if you run short of fuel in outer space or the engine gets faulty along the way ?
Another reason why sailing is important is that it could reduce the cost and time of the production of the space vehicle, and transportation planning. In this report, researchers have proposed what is referred to as a "solar sail" to counter the aforementioned challenges. But wait a minute, how can light from the sun directly propel a spacecraft like the wind here on earth does ?
That's a very interesting question and it's not too hard, just keep reading to find out and more.
Scientists Can Now Use Injectable Gels to Grow Electrodes in Your Brain
Some medical/experimental activities usually require introducing electricity into a living subject or getting electrical signals from the subject. To achieve it, the subject must be implemented with electrodes - mostly solid conductors of electricity, especially for positive and negative electrical signals. Conventionally, the electrodes come from outside and in the case of the brain, holes would have to be drilled in your skull before the electrodes can reach your brain.
Wait a minute, holes in my head ? 😳
Yes but i wonder how they close it up.
One problem with this approach is that the electrodes could carry an infection. In this report, researchers have developed a new way that requires growing the electrodes inside of the subjects body - the electrodes are purely biological, no need drilling holes.
Interesting, but how does it really work ?
If you're asking such a question, then move in here to quench your curiosity. But i doubt it would if you happen to think far like me. 😁
It is here we conclude today's report, have a thoughtful day and till i come your way again next week.
