These days obesity is getting a lot of sting from the media and I can understand how things like this come about. Usually, words from the medical field are taken by the general public and used as insults...Being Obsessed is gradually becoming one of those words eventually we will have to adopt the new phrase "Adipose Based Chronic Disease" or ABCD. But for this post, we will be sticking with Obesity.
I spoke with about making this competition. I have been waiting for a post so I can plan on curating it, but while I wait I thought maybe I should work on my post to see what it is like and maybe...win my competition if my entry is the best available.
Hello, my name is Dr Ebingo Kigigha and I am a medical doctor and an illustrator. I write about topics surrounding depression but in this post, I want to support my competition and hopefully show people how it's done.
What is research?
Webster said research includes investigation or experimentation that is aimed at new findings, reviewing facts, bringing new light to facts, or deriving new applications of old law and theories
1: studious inquiry or examination
especially : investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised theories or laws
The word is derived from the old French word "recherche", in English it means to go about searching or finding.
But enough About Etymology and definitions, let's go into the meat of this topic, My research work
My Research Work
The last time I was involved in research was in 2021. The search team comprised of myself and Dr Donald (Not on Hive) both of us were medical students then.
The title of our research was "PATTERN AND PREVALENCE OF OBESITY AND ITS ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONGST ADOLESCENTS IN PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OBIO-AKPOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA"
I And my research partner travelled from Choba University of Portharcourt River State which is within Obia-Akpo to a private school called BrianField which is around Eligbolo.

The distance from our residence was about 15km, which is not such a long drive
Our research was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Mind you there are different forms of research available.
Research can also be classified by the timeline it follows. Our study was a crossectional study. The other type of study is a** longitudinal study**. A **cross-sectional **study is like a picture of the data at a particular time in space, that is why our study happened in one day. While longitudinal studies are like videos of a study, and usually are monitored over a longer timeline.
When research is classified based on the depth of the scope, it can be descriptive, exploratory, explanatory, or correlational.
In our study, we aimed at pointing out the key features of the condition without going deep into the cause.
Find out more about the different types of research here.
Method of our research
This includes the study area, the study design, the study population, sample size determination, the sampling methods, the study method and other details of the method such as ethical considerations and the like.
Our study area (location), study design (study type), and study population (the age group) have been discussed above.
We used Abiola et al's study to fashion our sample size.
n= z2 x p.q/ d²
n = sample size
p = working prevalence rate ; 9.4%
q = 100 – p; 100 – 9.4
e = margin of sampling error tolerated at 95% degree of confidence= 5%
n =1.962 x 9.4x90.6/ 5²
n =3271.66/25
n = 130students
The above is mathematical jargon that I really can't explain right now.

After taking content from the school authorities to carry out the study, we used a 1-meter tape and a weigh scale to collect data. We had 160 participants from ages 10 to 19. We placed them against a wall and asked them to take a deep breath before measuring their height, then we asked them to look straight ahead.
We also used a structured questionnaire to gather information about the population's parental socioeconomic status, food consumption and details about physical activity and time spent watching TV and playing video games.

After our study, we found that out of the 130 students in this private school we studied, only 5.4% had ABDC. 3.9% of this population were in class 1 and 1.5% were in class 2.
Conlusion
We concluded that the percentage of those that had obese was low, but more still has to be done to prevent this rise we see in modern society today. As Nigeria continues to grow, it will be important to watch this progression and prevent a rise in this percentage.
