The birth of global quantum networks

China has just made a leap in quantum communication, because scientists from Peking University decided to attack a challenge as important as processing power, how to make these machines communicate with each other safely and efficiently. In a recent experiment, the team demonstrated an architecture capable of achieving secure quantum communication over distances equivalent to 3,700 km, an advance that may accelerate the birth of future global quantum networks.

The big problem is that current quantum communication based on the so-called quantum key distribution QSD, although extremely secure, still has serious limitations, requires expensive equipment, depends on reliable intermediate nodes and is not every good when many users need to connect at the same time.

In other words, it works in the laboratory, but it is still far from being the internet of the future, to overcome this, the researchers created an elegant solution, on the server side they used an ultra-stable optical comb, a system that generates laser lines synchronized with extreme precision, functioning as a central clock for the entire network.

On the client side, 20 independent quantum transmitter chips were used capable of encoding information, light pulses sent by common optical fiber each pair of chips. managed to communicate for about 370 km. Adding all channels, the total capacity reached the equivalent of 3,700 km of secure communication. The results draw attention: Success rate close to 27.5%, high stability and production based on industrial waffers, which opens the way to scale manufacturing.

Perhaps most importantly, all of this works using existing fiber optic cables, without the need for entirely new infrastructure. They imagine practical quantum networks could mean virtually tamper-proof communications between cities, financial systems and critical infrastructure.

It is a step towards a world where digital security stops depending only on algorithms and begins to depend on the physics of the universe itself.
