Google will receive energy from the world's first nuclear fusion plant

Google announced an unprecedented agreement to receive energy directly from the world's first grid-scale nuclear fusion plant, designed to generate no less than 400 MW of clean electricity, half of that energy will supply Bigtec's servers and humanity could be facing a new energy era.

Nuclear fusion is considered the holy grail of energy, because it works like the sun, light atoms collide at absurdly high temperatures above 100 million degrees Celsius, forming heavier nuclei and releasing a colossal amount of energy. Unlike the fission we use in conventional nuclear plants, fusion does not leave long-lasting waste, nor does it present the same contamination risks.

Commonwealth, Fusion Systems, a startup spun out of MIT, is behind the construction of the Google-backed ARC plant. When fully operational in the early 2030s, the project will not just be a technological milestone, but a turning point for energy-hungry sectors such as cloud and generative computing.

Large data centers that already consume more electricity than some entire countries today will be able to operate cleanly without depending on the wind, the sun or fragile electrical networks, and the bet is clear, Google wants to ensure that its global infrastructure continues to grow without carrying an unpayable carbon bill together with Microsoft, which also invests heavily in infusion.

This race marks the beginning of a new industry that could expand beyond data centers, reaching heavy industries, entire cities and even regions that today depend on “fossil” fuels. If all goes well, clean electricity from an artificial star here on Earth could change the planet's energy balance forever.
