A few days ago I shared a project that my team and I did at the request of a professor at our university, as mechatronics engineering students, and the problematic way this professor treated us. Finally, the day came to present it, after he changed the date, and I wanted to tell you how it went; in the end, the professor got a bit of karma.
Recalling a bit from the previous post, the professor asked us to create Christmas decorations for the school in exchange for giving us the maximum grade in his subject. He set a date, we worked and dedicated that entire day to installing everything, and right in the middle of the exact time agreed upon for the evaluation, he canceled everything with the excuse that he had been “accidentally” registered for a teachers’ contest — a contest where, if he won, he would receive a monetary prize, only for him, nothing for us.
He refused to evaluate us until the date of that contest, even though the project he had originally proposed had nothing to do with it. He behaved rudely toward everyone, and all the students ended up disappointed and angry due to such a lack of respect. There was nothing left to do but wait for the next date.
The new day arrived and he evaluated us; he arrived late, but everything went relatively smoothly. My team’s project — programmed lights built entirely from scratch by us — won first place. When announcing the results, the professor once again tried to change the prior agreements and attempted to give fewer awarded places than he had originally promised. Fortunately, all the students showed their discontent and pointed out the inconsistency between what had been agreed and what he was doing. After some quite intense discussions, the professor finally gave in. It seemed like everything was over and fine.
The next day was the teachers’ contest, where he was supposed to present the projects we had made. However, the professor ridiculously forgot to ask us for the controllers. All of our decorations were turned on and animated using infrared controllers, so he was simply unable to present anything.
At no point did he inform us of the date of his presentation. In fact, he had made us believe it would take place at the same time as our evaluation, and when explaining the project, he never told us that we had to hand over the controllers — until that very same day at 10 pm, when no one was left at the school. During our evaluation, he would even take the controllers to test the decorations and then return them to us.
So he most likely ended up looking ridiculous in his attempt to participate.
The following day, he arrived furious, saying everything was canceled and that he would no longer give us the agreed-upon reward because “we hadn’t respected the deal.” This was obviously stupid and infuriating for all of us. We confronted him, making it clear that he had never informed us of any of this, and his best argument was: “Do I really have to tell you that?” He insisted that we hadn’t respected the dates and brought up a bunch of nonsense.
We continued, pointing out how he hadn’t respected anything from the very beginning, all the irregularities in his behavior, and once again, that he had never asked us for anything he was now inventing. As soon as the discussion became slightly more intense, the professor immediately backed down, head lowered, since he apparently isn’t very brave either.
Even so, he didn’t fully respect the agreement and only exempted us from the exam, not the entire partial grade, but we accepted it just to get out of that situation.
Currently, my group and I are looking into how to report him, because it seems unbelievable that professors like this exist at the university. Beyond this incident, he has always been someone who tries to humiliate students in class, constantly shows irregularities in his evaluations, never teaches the full syllabus, and designs exams with content he never taught. Overall, he is a terrible teacher in every sense.
It’s a relief to finish the semester, and all that’s left is to hope we never have to deal with him again, as he represents a serious obstacle to our development.
