Hello everybody, nice to see you all again i took a week to come back to make post again.now i am going to make not weekly but regularly.and coming to this post we are left with two major nerves one is median nerve and another one is ulnar nervein this post i am going to tell about median nerve
MEDIAN NERVE
it is also called labourer's nerve/eye of the hand
It is originated from lateral cord & medial cord of brachial plexus
It supplies
In arm - no supply
In forearm - it enters forearm by passing between the two heads of pronator teres and it supplies all muscles of forearm excepts medial 1½ muscle(flexor carpi ulnaris & medial ½ of flexor digitorum profundus)
In hand - it supplies total of 5 muscles
thenar muscles except adductor pollicis and lumbricals L1 and L2 muscles.
We can understand the supply of the median nerve by the below schematic diagram.
In forearm it gives a branch called anterior interosseous nerve which supplies deep muscles of forearm and rest of it supplies superficial muscles of forearm and continue as median nerve.
Then the median nerve passes below flexor retinaculum(carpal tunnel) and before it going beneath the flexor retinaculum it gives a sensory branch called palmar branch which gives sensory supply to lateral 3½ palmar surface. You can see in diagram so that you will get idea about this.
The median nerve after entering into hand it supplies 5 muscles that i mentioned earlier and it gives another sensory branch called digital branch which gives sensory supply to lateral 3½ digits.
Clinical application - Median nerve injuries
It is divided into higher lesions an lower lesions
Higher lesions
1)Pronator teres syndrome - due to compression of median nerve while passing between two heads of it.
2)supracondylar fracture
3)struthers ligament
Signs -
- Ape-thumb deformity
- pointing index
- Sensory loss of lateral 3½ hand(palm+digits)

Lower lesion
It is also called as carpal tunnel syndrome
Signs -
- Ape-thumb deformity
- sensory loss of lateral 3½ digits only(no palmar branch involvement)
