I would dare to say that many of us have been obsessed at some point with some part of our body that we wanted to look better, especially in adolescence, which is when hormones are the most excited and we are more affected by criticism. The problem becomes serious when we take that obsession to extreme situations, so I will make my entry to the initiative of the month answering the proposed questions giving my opinion about extreme beauty and sharing my personal experience.

Me atrevería a decir que muchos de nosotros nos hemos obsesionado alguna vez con alguna parte de nuestro cuerpo que queríamos se viera mejor, sobre todo en la adolescencia que es cuando las hormonas están más alborotadas y nos afectan más las críticas. El problema se hace grave cuando llevamos esa obsesión a situaciones extremas, por eso hare mi entrada a la iniciativa del mes respondiendo las preguntas propuestas opinando al respecto sobre la belleza extrema y compartiendo mi experiencia personal.

Do you know of any extreme case of cosmetic surgeries that shocked you?

The first one that comes to my mind is that of the beautiful model Silvina Luna, she was already beautiful naturally, but the pressure of the media and criticism led her to continue improving her physical appearance through surgeries until she unfortunately died of a malpractice at a very young age. I saw this woman since I was a child, I always watched her on TV and admired her beauty, but unfortunately the pressure and stereotypes won her over and today she is one more victim of the system and extreme beauty.

Do you think that behind this obsession to be always beautiful there is a serious social problem?

Of this I have no doubt, in the world of models, for example, we have heard several of them confess that they have been victims of a strong demand and tremendous pressure to always look beautiful, young and perfect, leading these people to a serious case of low self-esteem and extreme surgeries. Not only the work environment, but the audience, many people who claim to be fans of these celebrities are constantly criticizing them, if they look fat, if they look thin, if they got old, which we all get old and we should be grateful for that because not everyone has the privilege of living so many years. Unfortunately the psychological damage they suffer is not easy to repair and can end very badly, so something is definitely going wrong in society.

¿Conoces algún caso extremo de cirugías estéticas que te haya impactado?

El primero que se me viene a la mente es el de la hermosa modelo Silvina Luna, ella ya era bella naturalmente, pero la presión de los medios y las críticas la llevaron a seguir mejorando su apariencia física a través de las cirugías hasta que lamentablemente falleció por una mala praxis a muy temprana edad. Yo veía a esta mujer desde pequeña, siempre la veía por la televisión y admiraba su belleza, pero lamentablemente la presión y los estereotipos le ganaron y hoy es una víctima más del sistema y de la belleza extrema.

¿Crees que detrás de esa obsesión por ser siempre bella hay un grave problema social?

De esto no me cabe dudas, en el mundo de las modelos, por ejemplo, se ha escuchado a varias de ellas confesar que han sido víctimas de una fuerte demanda y una tremenda presión por lucir siempre bellas, jóvenes y perfectas, llevando a estas personas a un caso grave de baja autoestima y cirugías extremas. No solo el ambiente laboral, sino la audiencia, muchas personas que dicen ser admiradores de estas celebridades están constantemente criticándolas, si lucen gordas, si lucen delgadas, si envejecieron, cosa que todos envejecemos y debemos agradecer eso porque no todos tienen el privilegio de vivir tantos años. Lamentablemente el daño psicológico que sufren no es fácil de reparar y puede terminar muy mal, así que definitivamente algo está fallando en la sociedad.

Do you know anyone who has suffered from this obsession or did you have any personal experience?

If I told you the amount of bullying I suffered because of my physical appearance you would be shocked, I don't even remember the amount of nicknames I was called. There was a time when I was obsessed with looking beautiful in order to be liked, that's why I used to wear so much make-up regardless of the fact that it caused allergies in my eyes, I preferred to look beautiful than to pay attention to the signs of allergies. I also became obsessed with another part of my body to the point of considering surgery, all because of the bullying I suffered, but fortunately, as I entered adulthood I understood that I was not born to satisfy and please others, but to satisfy and please myself.

Why do you think some people are so obsessed with always looking beautiful and young to the point of risking their own lives?

For the same reasons I mentioned before, society, the work environment, destructive criticism, lack of self-esteem, low self-esteem, all together generate a radioactive bomb inside that person that explodes with surgery after surgery until something goes wrong. That is why I admire those people who are in that environment and still have the mental strength and high self-esteem to not listen to them and continue looking natural, but as I said, it is not easy to face those pressures, they destroy you and turn you into something you are not.

¿Conoces a alguien que haya padecido esta obsesión o tuviste alguna experiencia personal?

Si les contara la cantidad de bullying que sufrí por mi apariencia física quedarían shockeados, ya ni recuerdo la cantidad de apodos que me ponían. Hubo un tiempo que estaba obsesionada con lucir bella para gustarles, por eso me maquillaba tanto sin importar que eso me generaba alergia en los ojos, prefería lucir bella a prestar atención a los signos de alergia. También me obsesioné con otra parte de mi cuerpo al punto de considerar operarme, todo por el bullying que sufría, pero por fortuna, al ir entrando en la edad adulta comprendí que no nací para satisfacer ni gustarle a otros, sino para satisfacerme y gustarme a mí misma.

¿Por qué crees que algunas personas se obsesionan tanto por lucir siempre bellas y jóvenes hasta el punto de arriesgar su propia vida?

Por las mismas razones que plantee anteriormente, la sociedad, el ambiente laboral, las criticas destructivas, la falta de amor propio, la baja autoestima, todo junto genera una bomba radioactiva en el interior de esa persona que estalla con cirugías tras cirugías hasta que algo sale mal. Por eso admiro a esas personas que están en ese ambiente y aun así tienen la fortaleza mental y la alta autoestima para no escucharlos y seguir luciendo naturales, pero como dije, no es nada fácil encarar esas presiones, te destruyen y te convierten en algo que no eres.
