Como todos los seres vivos, los gatos necesitan ingerir agua, para mantenerse hidratados y posiblemente evitar algunos problemas de salud, como por ejemplo problemas urinarios o renales. En este post quiero hacerles énfasis de lo importante que es para tu gato ingerir la suficiente cantidad de agua.
Si lo has notado los gatos no son bebedores de agua por excelencia, no pretendo dar las razones aquí, pero al no ser Veterinario presumo que se debe a que se debe a que son animales estrictamente carnívoros, en caso de vivir en la naturaleza, obtienen la hidratación que necesitan de sus presas, como ocurre con otros animales cazadores.
Ahora bien, el estar en casa como animales de compañía, solemos darles los llamados alimentos para gatos o piensos, que nos son los mejores para aportar la suficiente hidratación a nuestros queridos gatos. De allí la importancia de que consuman la suficiente cantidad de agua.
Los veterinarios recomiendan que el gato como mínimo, debe beber 50 ml. de agua por cada kilo de peso. Entonces, un gato de cinco kilos como Señor Gato, debe beber por lo menos 250 ml de agua a diario. Esta cantidad puede variar dependiendo el clima en épocas de calor o verano, el gato buscará y necesitará más agua , ahora en épocas de frío o invierno, el gato podría dejarr de ingerir suficiente agua y debemos estar atentos a ello,la razón es que nuestro querido amigo podría deshidratarse.
Ahora bien, existen razones importantes por las cuales los gatos deben tomar suficiente agua, una de ellas es evitar enfermedades o empeorar otras, además de la ya mencionada deshidratacion que podria ya estar presente en tu mínimo, te recomiendo estar alerta ante estos síntomas de deshidratación:
- Orina muy concentrada (color muy oscuro)
- Apatía
- Respiración acelerada y dificultosa
- Pérdida de elasticidad de la piel
- Aumento del ritmo cardiaco
- Cansancio
- Ojos hundidos
Cómo te mencioné en el párrafo anterior el que un gato dejé de ingerir suficiente agua puede traer como consecuencia problemas renales, recordemos que los riñones requieren ingesta de líquidos, sobre todo agua, para trabajar de manera adecuada , además podría ocasionar problemad urinarios, como es el caso de Señor Gato que desde los tres años (actualmente tiene 8) ha padecido mucho con está enfermedad y debe ingerir suficiente agua limpia y fresca para evitar recaídas.
Así mismo, la escasa ingesta de agua puede empeorar enfermedades que ya esté padecido nuestro consentido como problemas hormonales o hepáticos por mencionar algunos.
Ahora bien, sabemos y algunos hemos vivido las mañas que algunos gatos tienen para tomar agua , algunos les gusta beber directamente del grifo ,otros simplemente prefieren unos envases a otros, esto último, podría deberse a que son muy estrechos y profundos , recuerda que en otra publicación les comenté acerca del síndrome de agotamiento facial en gatos,, aquí lo importante es que el gato tenga siempre agua limpia y fresca, que debe ser cambiada al menos una vez al día, de preferencia hervida o mineral, ya que no en todos los países del mundo el agua que proveniente de las tuberías es la más óptima y en lugar de ayudar podría ser causante de más problemas.
Para los gatos a los que les gusta el agua en movimiento han creado fuentes para que ellos sientan atraídos y no dejen de ingerir agua, podrás encontrar diversos modelos en tiendas por internet o tiendas para mascotas.
También para aumentar la ingesta de líquidos en nuestro amigos te recomiendo que si sólo les das de comer piensos o alimento para gatos , incluyas en su dieta alimentacion húmeda, ya sea de la que venden en tiendas (latas de paté o similares) o puedes preparar comida barf para ellos, existen variadas recetas en internet, ya en Venezuela y otras partes del mundo han nacido compañías pequeñas que notaron está necesidad y elaboran este tipo de alimentos.
