Molly Celebrated Her 14th Birthday This Weekend..
But it wasn’t a joyful happy feeling good kind of celebration. It was rather quite the opposite. Molly has been under the weather again. But despite feeling bad and making several trips to the veterinarian clinic, Molly managed to eat up every last drop of her birthday ice cream. I guess that was the light in an otherwise gloomy week. It has been getting increasingly harder to get her to eat, so if it has to be ice cream then that’s what it’s going to be.
It started off last weekend with a trip to the veterinarian clinic for Molly‘s annual exam and her three-year rabies shot. When we got home, and later that night, a thunderstorm move through causing Molly a bit of anxiety.
She also got a shot of her DOCP for her Addison’s disease. So, she had a vet visit, An injection at home, a thunderstorm, and whatever else may have occurred… It was a lot for that poor little dog. After about 24 hours or so, she developed diarrhea, vomiting, lethargic… Whole bunch of crap. So off to the vet we go again after waiting a day or two to see if it improved.
We weren’t sure if it was the Rabies shot, her Addison’s shot, anxiety from the boom boom, or something else going on, but it wasn’t getting any better.
I loaded Molly up into the truck and headed to the vet office … AGAIN! We take her in this fluffy bed of hers. She seems to be a bit calmer when we do. A little comfort from home never hurts.
When we arrived to the veterinary clinic, we did what Molly loves to do most… Wait. And we waited and we waited and we waited. She hates waiting! She usually pants and paces in anticipation of the doctor arriving into the room. This time was a little different. She didn’t have that anxiety and I attribute that to her not feeling well. She just didn’t feel good enough to make a fuss.
After lots of waiting, several blood tests, some poking and prodding and what not, a few injections and a rather large bill, we were ready to head home and get out of that place. So back in the truck we go to head home and hopefully head towards a better place healthwise.
With all the blood tests they had to run, they had to take blood from both front legs. Poor girl. At least she got some cool bandages out of the deal! Camo her favorite color!
We got home and I found myself writing down all of the medications and the time of day were supposed to give them. It’s the only way I can keep those kind of things straight. We also made her comfortable as we could. She’s not eating much, not drinking much, kind of just lying around most of the time, when she’s not pooping her brains out. On occasion she does get a spurt of energy and is willing to eat a little more than normal. So we’re trying our best to keep her motivated and fed.
It’s hard seeing her so miserable. We tried to cheer her up with the baby talk and ice cream. That’s the best we can do until she’s feeling better.
The blood test result came back and revealed that her ‘Bands’ number was high. I never heard of bands before, rather than the everyday musical band. So that term was new to me. The doctor explained that it meant there was an infection somewhere in her body. So this makes sense. We added an antibiotic to the mix and Molly has been taking that for a few days. Unfortunately the antibiotic also can loosen her bowels which complicates the problem even more. Oh well. We do what we have to do! We do a lot of cleaning up I’ll tell you. Molly has also had quite a few baths in the past 72 hours. Ugggg.
Last night I saw Molly sort of hacking on something and I was afraid she was choking. I ran over and swiped her mouth and found this…
A Birthday Tooth!
Looks like the old lady is loosing more teeth. I guess it’s a part of getting old. We have to face it that our puppy isn’t young and spry anymore. She’s in her senior years and that’s always a tough part of dog ownership. They require a lot of care at this age to keep some sort of quality to their life.
That tooth may have been the problem anyhow. It’s possible she was losing it and a small infection started occurring under it. She did just get over a recent abscess a few months ago, so this may have something to do with that. It may even be the same tooth she was having a problem with. Let’s hope so!
HAPPY 14th BIRTHDAY MOLLY!!!!
Here’s To brighter days ahead and more quality days than bad ones.
I find the calm after the storm very peaceful. There is beauty in everything, including the peace that follows the most darkest and violent of moments. I am reminded of this every time a thunderstorm passes with all its fury, later revealing the calm, beautiful, peaceful sky. We were too busy cleaning up stains from the carpet to enjoy it longer, but it was impressive!
Thank you for swinging by my blog and checking out the post. Have a great day!
