From the age of five, I always wanted a Golden Retriever puppy. I would beg my Mum continuously- asking for one every single Christmas. Even though I was thankful for the cats and hamster I got instead, deep down…I always knew I was a dog person.
When I was seven, my Mum told me that we could get a puppy when I turned ten, so long as I saved up all my allowance money to “pay for her.” I wrote up a contract (on my Mum’s grocery notepad) and made her sign it. yes, she still has it somewhere I was buzzzinggg!
I saved every penny I was ever given in a small wooden box, I remember counting it constantly.
When I turned nine, my Mum started looking for breeders and researching dogs. My heart broke a little when she explained she couldn’t have a shedding dog as she’s severely allergic.
But, she kept her word and when I turned ten, we went to pick up my beautiful baby girl “Chase” the maltipoo. I was over the moon, and for a while- Golden Retrievers weren’t “all that.” I happily handed every penny over (which added up to $615.00 CAD, my Mum secretly paid the rest). And for my tenth birthday party, I asked everyone for dog toys and treats instead of gifts for “me.”
Chase was the best small dog I’ve ever met. Sweet, cuddly, energetic, and such a fighter.
Sadly, baby Chase passed away at the age of 15, two years ago- just after I had moved to the UK 💔 I’d never been so heartbroken. Whilst my parents still had our second dog back home, I didn’t…and I knew it was time for me to find my next baby angel.
There was never any doubt in my mind that I’d get a Golden Retriever the second I could- and here he is. My dream dog, who’s exceeded all my dreams. My best boy, best friend.
I like to think that he’s so white because Chase was. And sometimes, when he looks into my eyes I swear I can see hers.
I’ve seriously waited all my life for this dog, and he’s been sooo worth the wait. But I wouldn’t change a thing along the way. He came right when he needed to ❤️
