How difficult it is when at home you have most of the family members against you so that they agree to you without any objection to having a Dog, but in the end with its beauty and nobility they end up in love and include it as one more member of the family in just hours or minutes. And that's how it was, how my best friend for 8 years came to the family.
I present to you, Nahel was called a Golden Retriever, he really wanted a different name than usual, since he was not just any dog. I will tell you a little about his parents: The eldest son of a litter of 16 puppies, 8 males and 8 females, I say older because he was the first to be born, almost white and very big, his father was National Champion at that time for best Breed, her name was if I'm not mistaken Brandi, her mother was from Brazil and she met the one who would be her partner (Brandi) in a competition in the capital Venezuela - Caracas she was Runner-up as best Breed, they were spectacular dogs, both their fur like her color, almost brown and she almost white, so Nahel came out to her mom in the color and with the size and face of her dad.
Nahel was born on February 14 here on Valentine's Day in 2009 and she came to me on the first of April when she was only 2 months old. It was a ball of fur as we say here, white and playful. The first to meet him is my mom, I had to tell him a white lie by telling him that he was not going to be big, that he was a small medium breed dog, I still remember that day as if it were yesterday. She asked me, are you sure, son, that he is medium? And I answered, yes, of course, mommy, Nahel is not going to be that big… Well, the hours passed until I got home with him, the first to receive me was my aunt, she doesn't live much with animals and how she was Hopefully he got upset, I tell you, he spent more than 2 months without talking to me while Nahel spent the whole day in the room without going out, she didn't want him and to avoid inconvenience that was the solution, instead my grandmother just told me, while you take charge no problem.
This is how the days began to pass, Nahel from his first day to his needs in the newspaper while I was in class or on the street doing some errand, then I would take him out for a walk so he could develop his muscles like a normal dog. Nahel began to grow and become part of the Family, and my aunt loved him, he spent part of the day with her, he could now walk throughout the house, he slept with my mother or with me, he went everywhere with us, he already knew which one it was his place in the car.
Nahel grew up and ate like a dinosaur, she had her snacks, which her grandmother (my Mom) bought for her every month, she went to the vet to check him out and do his check-ups, between my Mom and I we bought her vitamins, it was As a child, the care, his food, his toys, everything, he was very demanding, he just needed to talk.
I tell you, going for a walk was very funny, because it was inevitable that someone would stop us to take pictures with him or simply to caress him, because that's what Nahel liked to be touched and pampered. We always went through an ice cream parlor that his owner gave him Mantecado ice cream, it became a habit for him, since we used to go by since he was a puppy and it was at least every other day that he ate his portion of ice cream.
Every birthday was celebrated, even with a small cake, it's a pity that the photos of those days were lost in the old computer that due to an electrical problem burned the hard drive. Nahel was the darling of the Family and the Urbanization, everyone had to do with him, whoever passed by greeted him or brought him crackers or sweets, they were his favorites, but none of the chocolate.
He had a personal trainer, a real star, the trainer was a neighbor we called Goyo, he took him jogging and swimming near a park every day, where there was a small lagoon. That is why I think that its size, of course, is also due to the genetics of its parents.
This is how the days went by, and Nahel was more spoiled every day, to the point of eating with the family, not at the table, but to one side, at the time we all ate. He never wanted to sleep in the patio, he was always in one of the rooms and never alone, I forgot to tell you, he was very nervous with loud noises, such as lightning or fireworks, in December it was a big problem, I had to sedate him with medication especially on December 24 and 31.
In Venezuela there was a time when dog food began to be scarce, due to economic problems or production of the raw material, at that moment I had to make very drastic decisions and look for solutions to have food for Nahel, at that moment I took one of my worst decisions in life, buy processed food produced in the city where I live by companies that made feed for cattle and pigs. As it was dog food, without knowing that it was high in fat, it was the only solution I found to continue feeding it without thinking that it would cause health problems in the short-medium term.
I missed a part of the story, when Nahel began to get girlfriends, whoever saw him and had a dog of that breed wanted Nahel to be the partner of that dog, it was tried on many occasions, but one limitation was the size and weight of Nahel. On one of the many occasions that Nahel was tried to ride, the dog's owner worked at a recognized veterinarian in the city, since he was quite interested in his dog becoming pregnant by Nahel, so he tells me that if I don't have a problem I can take Nahel to the said place to inseminate her dog and that's when we realize that Nahel suffers from thyroid, I had no choice but to take them to their vet to perform the necessary tests and yes, that's how it was, He had this pathology, from that moment on he had to take medication daily to control his levels, that's why it was his weight, he was controlled due to things in life and he was a normal happy and playful dog.
A few more months passed when in February 2017 he was diagnosed with possible hepatitis, his skin was yellow, we began with all the exams and treatments for him to recover, after many exams and days later they realized that Nahel has level 3 fatty liver and that thanks to that poor quality dog that I bought for him at that time. After a month he began to retain fluid, his kidneys were already failing at only 8 years old, he was still a young dog with the desire to continue living and running, I had to hospitalize him so that somehow they would try to make him drain all that liquid that he had in his belly, leaving him there for a week was very difficult, since he was my sleeping partner and not having him to go for a walk in the mornings was not easy.
After a week I look for him and he was another, he was very thin but with his tail from side to side as always, when he got home he went to our room and lay down to sleep next to the bed, after several days again He began to retain fluid and we went to the vet to assess him, the Doctor told me, leave him to see how he reacts but I think there is not much to do, 15 more days passed like this, when they called me to go look for him, my joy was immense, his desire to live was great, he wanted to continue with us, he had an extreme diet, he could no longer eat his cookies or his ice cream, that had changed, he no longer had the same strength, how he got up and hardly ate.
On April 6, 2017, at night, Nahel no longer responded, only when you called his name did he try to move his tail, his kidneys did not work and his liver was very deteriorated, the vet came home when he saw him, Jota told me there is no solution, nothing can be done anymore.
Now Nahel is my little angel dog and in his last minutes of life I thanked him for all the moments, adventures, happiness and games that we lived together. Until forever, friend.
Note: For obvious reasons I couldn't extend the story, it really affects me a lot every time I remember it. On another occasion I continue.
I hope you liked it and I wish all your furry friends a lot of health, they really make the days different. Enjoy them to the fullest and in the best way that you can.
