While it was very common in the past for us to find furrever homes for strays in North America in the past and they were our number 1 destination for getting homes for stray dogs, this has almost completely disappeared in the past 2 years. It has been a huge disappointment for us especially when the United States adopted more rules for importing dogs - one of which makes it damn near impossible and really expensive to even attempt to bring a dog in from overseas.
We have had a few successes though and today I want to talk about a lovely little fur baby called "Pancake."
Most of the homeless dogs that we deal with have pleasant demeanors but every now and then there is a real standout and Pancake was definitely one of those. She was one of those dogs that even if you had treats with you, she was far more interested in receiving lovies and pats than she was in whatever food you had for her. She was great with children and other dogs and honestly, had one of the greatest attitudes of any of the hundreds of dogs I have interacted with in the past years.
In the past, a dog like Pancake would not stay in our kennels for very long because when tourism was thriving, volunteers would come by to meet our resident dogs and they would have have taken notice of how amazing Pancake was almost immediately, the same way that we did. We went through the process of shipping her to Canada to her new home and thankfully, although it was very expensive the entire process went very smoothly and Pancake is now settles in at her new snowy home.
Obviously, a Thai street dog is going to get cold pretty easy so her new owners have provided her with a plethora of jackets and coats to wear whenever they go outside.
It is nice to get the updates from her new owners about how well she is adapting to her new environment and while I was sad to see Pancake go as was everyone else here that loved her, we all know that she is far better off with a loving family that will treat her extremely well for all of her days.
Pancake's adoptees wished to remain anonymous and that of course is something we will honor. We are extremely grateful that there are kind people out there that are willing to open up their lives and their homes for the suffering dog population of Thailand, especially when in this situation we were dealing with being literally on the other side of the globe. It was a long and difficult journey for Pancake, but now she has soft beds, plenty of food, and some wonderful outdoor activities to do where she can wander and play without fear of disease, getting hit by motorbikes, and the myriad of other dangers that exist for street dogs here in Thailand.
Remember this please: If you want a dog - and I promise you that taking care of one is a life-changing experience - to please at least consider adopting rather than buying a dog. Shelters like our own around the world are bursting at the seams with dogs looking for a home and when you purchase a purebred dog you are actively participating in is what is a mostly very brutal and unregulated industry.
We miss Pancake but are very happy that she is in a better place now where she will be showered with the love that she is so willing to give out every single day of her life.
