Hello Hive Fam, most especially to all the wonderful pet lovers across the globe! šš
I hope youāre all doing well and enjoying precious moments with your furry, feathery, or even scaly companions. Today, I want to share a unique experience that recently added a little twist to my daily routine. Itās not about cats or dogs this time; itās about chickens! Yes, you read that right. Two female chickens have become part of my life, and I never thought Iād be writing about them here on Hive.
Last week, I stumbled into a new side hustle. One of my neighbors approached me with a request: he wanted to house his two hens in a vacant lot near my home. Technically, the space isnāt mine, but the actual owner hasnāt built anything there yet and seldom visits. With her permission, my neighbor set up a small chicken house, since his backyard no longer had room for them.
My role? Feeding the hens twice a dayāmorning and afternoon. He provides the feeds regularly, so all I need to do is sprinkle the grains and watch the chickens happily peck away. Honestly, itās such an easy task that I told him I didnāt mind doing it even without pay. But he insisted on compensating me, and I gratefully accepted since, like many of us, I could use the extra income to ease some financial challenges.
What I love most about this arrangement is how these chickens bring a sense of calm and joy. Their gentle clucking and curious little movements make me smile, and Iāve started to appreciate them as more than just ālivestock.ā Theyāre living creatures with personalities, and caring for them feels rewarding in ways beyond money.
My neighbor plans to take them back in a few months, possibly to join a cockfight. Until then, Iāll be their caretaker, ensuring theyāre well-fed and comfortable. Itās a small responsibility, but itās teaching me patience, consistency, and the joy of connecting with animalsāeven those we donāt usually think of as pets.
Thank you, Hive Fam, for reading my little story. Iām grateful to share this feathered adventure with all of you, and Iād love to hear if any of you have had similar experiences with chickens or other unconventional pets.
Until next time, keep loving and caring for your animal companions. They truly make life brighter! šš¾
