「 How many cats is too many? 」

Whenever I tell people I have over 10 cats, they all get surprised. In our house, we currently house 10 little munchkins. It all really started with just one and grew to 4 then grew to 12 and shrink, and the cycle repeats.
In our house, the cats live freely as if they’re the owner of the place. They have many places to play, to sleep or to lounge around. During these past few months, many things have happened to the cat. We lost some of our cats but also some of them were adopted by friends and families. Still, despite all that, we now have 10 cats, ruling over the house.
Recently, one of my friends returned the cat to our house because she’s tired of taking care of the cat. I mean, cats can get costly and I dare say, it’s as costly as raising a child. In our house, we spend about 15kg of dry food in a month for 10 cats and we sometimes add wet food into the mixture of their meal. So, give and take it's about 20kg of food in a month.
We also spend about 50kg of litter each month and then there’s miscellaneous things such as their medication or certain treatment for their skin problems. So, I can imagine that number is pretty steep each month just to spend on taking care of these cats.
But, at one point, my mom and I thought about not having the cats around the house. I mean, we wanted to give all of them up for adoption. The thing is, the house would be even more empty without them. For now, having the cats around, they could help us act as a guard. They even make the house even livelier because they will occupy the empty rooms and we’ll know it’s not going to be empty.
There’s not a day when our house isn’t filled with shenanigans. They are always doing something and always playful. However, some of them live outside the house and only get back during their meal times. They know exactly when to return, which is around 6 AM, 12PM and later around 6 PM during their dinner time. Once they are well-fed, they are less likely bothering my mother and I. In fact, if they are so well-fed, they would just lay down in one of their favorite spots all around the house.
I haven’t talked about them for a while because there were just too many things happening. I even brought Cici, the eldest to a vet recently and she was also in for grooming time. The last time she was properly groomed was quite many moons ago and especially after my father passed, she was a bit unkept. So, about last month, I took her to be groomed and properly cleaned.
For the kittens, I typically take care of myself because we have a small basin and can only accommodate until a cat becomes junior. Once they are a year old, we typically bring them to a groomer and have them properly clean once every 2 months.
As it is in rotation, it also doesn’t break my wallet taking care of them. I think having a healthy cat will also save us in the long term. Vet visits can be so expensive and it’s best to actually take care of them so they don’t get sick easily which require more vet visits. The last time I brought my cat to a vet was when Mio suffered a brain injury and got a stroke. That one cost me an arm and leg 😂 you know, maybe there should be general insurance for cats, a cheaper monthly plan because just one visit is a lot more expensive than a typical physician.
So, that’s the update from my munchkins. I have a lot of them now and I might as well be a cat lady hahaha.
