When I was a kid, I always love the idea of having a dog of my own. Even though I was once bitten by a dog, it did not lessen my determination of having one in the future. Of-course my parents weren’t notified about the incident but still they were against the idea of getting a dog because of the rabies and the repercussions it might bring after we decided to have one. That was how it’s always been in our household not until we moved to Camiguin Island and my cousin decided to buy a dog. My parents finally were able to see what other fur parents saw with their dogs. They learned how to loved one and to break the stigma that all dogs do is bite.
My mom was the one who encouraged me to get a dog. And for the first time, my dream of having one was put into reality. I instantly looked up the different dog shelters that I can find online until I came across this lovable pawsome dog on Facebook group. I met someone who were rescuing dogs and looking for fur parents to take care of those abandoned dogs on the streets. Listening to her story about the dogs moved me that I decided to adopt one. My younger sister then named him “Bullet”.
Bullet was about two months old when we got him. It was also the same day when we lost someone from our family due to Covid-19. Everything felt so gray that day but because of Bullet’s unexpected appearance in our lives, we were able to get past through the hardships of losing a loved one. Bullet was indeed an angel. He gave us hope and made us strong during our most difficult times. The joy he gave us every day could not amount to anything else in this world.
Since Bullet is technically our first dog, all of us were quite unsure on how to take care of him. And saying he didn’t need care would be an understatement. For the past two months since he was born, all he ever experienced was the cruel life of living in a street. So, when he was finally under our care, we soon realized that he lacked in so many things. He developed a temporary illness that was caused by him being exposed to dirt. He was malnourished. My sister and I then decided to get him checked. Despite the money we had to spend, Bullet’s safety was our top priority so we didn’t mind it at all. Bullet just became another reason for me to work harder. I never want to let him down because the moment we accepted him as a part of the family, my responsibility and love for him became equal to what I felt to my sisters.
Bullet’s presence gave us the opportunity to have a baby brother too since we never experience having one. We treat him as if he’s our brother by blood and we spoiled him so much. He is always included in our plans and we always make sure that he would benefit in our every decision just as much as we benefit from it.
Now, I can’t believe it’s already been eight months since we first laid eyes on our Bullet. He’s grown so much now. He picks up lots of habits along the way and I will be lying if I say that every phase that our dog has gone through didn’t endear us. Every puppy eye that greets us every morning, the nervous barking when surrounded by other dogs, the gentle poke he made when he wants what we’re eating. Those were just one of many reminders we had every single day that we are blessed to have him in our lives.
