Hace unas semanas atrás les comenté que asistimos al veterinario para tratar su otitis crónica, parte del tratamiento recomendado por la doctora incluyó el uso permanente de collar Isabelino para que no se rascara sus orejas, hasta que estas mejoraran.
Hello dear Hive Pets community. How are you doing? Today I would like to share with you a medical experience I had with my pet, Bruno. A few weeks ago I told you that we went to the vet to treat his chronic otitis, part of the treatment recommended by the doctor included the permanent use of an Elizabethan collar to keep him from scratching his ears until they improved.
Al realizar la historia médica de Bruno y comentarle a la veterinaria de su reciente largo viaje por carretera, desde Cumaná-Venezuela hasta Bogota-Colombia, ella nos sugirió adquirir un collar isabelino más cómodo que los que comúnmente se consiguen en el mercado. Este suele ser conocido como “dona” por su aspecto circular y acolchado, cumple la misma función que un collar isabelino común y corriente solo que es un poco más costoso por las comodidades que ofrece.
When we told to the vet Bruno's medical history and his recent long road trip from Cumaná-Venezuela to Bogota-Colombia, she suggested us to buy a pet cone more comfortable than the ones commonly available in the market. This is usually known as "dog Donut collar” because of its circular and padded appearance, it fulfills the same function as a common Elizabethan collar, but it is a little more expensive for the comfort it offers.
La verdad es que no investigamos muchas opciones y compramos el primero que conseguimos, este que les muestro a continuación que tuvo un costo un poco mayor a 25$.
The truth is that we did not investigate many options and we bought the first one we got, this one that I show you below, which cost a little more than 25$.
Al principio habíamos comprado la talla S, sin embargo, al probárselo le quedaba muy apretado, entonces decidimos medir su cuello y hacer el cambio por una talla M, más adecuado a sus medidas. En las instrucciones del empaque indicaba que este collar es perfecto para lesiones, sarpullidos y post operatorios. Además, es lavable y resistente a mordidas o rasguños.
At first we had bought the size S, however, when we tried it on it was too tight, so we decided to measure his neck and make the change for a size M, more appropriate to his measurements. The instructions on the packaging indicated that this collar is perfect for injuries, rashes and post-surgery. In addition, it is washable and resistant to bites or scratches.
Para colocárselo por primera vez fue necesario inflarlo con la boca, un procedimiento que no duró más de 5 minutos. Al ponérselo, Bruno no pareció notar ningún cambio, se veía calmado y tranquilo y eso me hizo muy feliz :). Las primeras horas mi perro estuvo en supervisión, para evaluar qué tal funcionaba, si estaba cómodo y si llegaba a rascarse o no. Nos dimos cuenta que por momentos, y gracias a sus paticas largas sí lograba rascarse con dificultad 🙈 sin embargo, luego de algunos regaños dejó de intentarlo. De igual forma, no alcanzaba a lamerse sus paticas y esto también era una parte esencial del tratamiento para la dermatitis de su piel.
To put it on for the first time, it was necessary to inflate it with the mouth, a procedure that did not take more than 5 minutes. When I put the donut on Bruno, he didn't seem to notice any change, he looked calm and quiet and that made me very happy :). The first hours my dog was under supervision, to evaluate how it was working, if he was comfortable and if he was scratching or not. We realized that at times, and thanks to his long paws, he did manage to scratch with difficulty 🙈 however, after some scolding he stopped trying. Likewise, he was not able to lick his paws and this was also an essential part of the treatment for his skin dermatitis.
Bruno estuvo utilizando su “dona” por aproximadamente 3 semanas. Fue crucial que la tuviera durante todo el día, pero sobre todo en las noches, cuando no podíamos vigilarlo y sería más probable que se rascase. Solo se lo quitaba para salir a pasear, para que la tela del collar no se ensuciara, y en algunos momentos al final del tratamiento para que se estirara más cómodamente en su camita. Durante los días que lo usó no se vio afectado su humor, apetito o sueño, así que pienso que fue buena idea utilizar este tipo de collar, mucho más cómodo que los que conseguimos comúnmente en el mercado.
Bruno was using his "donut" for about 3 weeks. It was crucial that he had it on throughout the day, but especially in the evenings when we couldn't watch him and he would be more likely to scratch. He would only take it off to go for walks, so that the fabric of the collar wouldn't get dirty, and at times at the end of the treatment so that he could stretch out more comfortably in his little bed. During the days she wore it, her mood, appetite or sleep was not affected, so I think it was a good idea to use this type of collar, much more comfortable than the ones we commonly get in the market.
La última vez que fuimos al veterinario la doctora dio de alta a Bruno y nos dijo que solo sería necesaria volver a usar este collar isabelino en caso de que se rascara con frecuencia nuevamente, de lo contrario, solo debíamos limpiar sus orejas con regularidad y con eso estaría listo.
The last time we went to the vet, the doctor discharged Bruno and told us that we would only need to use this Elizabethan collar again in case he scratched frequently, otherwise, we just had to clean his ears regularly and he would be fine.
Brunito se recuperó de su otitis crónica y tal parece que este tipo de collar isabelino fue esencial para su recuperación. Lo único es que me pareció un poco costoso, porque los collares isabelinos tradicionales son muy económicos (menos de 5$), sin embargo, creo que hubiese podido conseguir un mejor precio si hubiese preguntado en otras tiendas.
Brunito recovered from his chronic otitis and it seems that this type of Elizabethan collar was essential for his recovery. The only thing is that I found it a bit expensive, because traditional Elizabethan collars are very inexpensive (less than $5), however, I think I would have been able to get a better price if I had asked in other stores.
