Emigrating is a process that costs mental, emotional and economic resources. Traveling from one country to another implies having a plan, airline tickets, documentation and in many cases advice from specialized people. This is as true for the emigration of humans as it is for pets.
Emigrar es un proceso que cuesta recursos mentales, emocionales y económicos. Viajar de un país a otro implica tener un plan, boletos de avión, documentación y en muchos casos asesoría de personas especializadas. Es así tanto para la emigración de humanos como de mascotas de compañía.
More than 6 million people have emigrated from Venezuela to different countries around the world. Many times these migrants have had to leave behind their families, children and even their dogs and cats.
De Venezuela han emigrado más de 6 millones de personas a distintos países al rededor del mundo. Muchas veces estos migrantes han tenido que dejar atrás a sus familias, hijos e incluso a sus perros y gatos.
Since the massive migration of Venezuelans began, I saw through social networks that many managed to move their pets to Chile, Ecuador, United States, Spain, with the purpose of reuniting again or not being separated from their furry ones. Some arrived with them to a new country and others sent them after a few months or years. When I found out that I would also be in the migrant category, I thought about my dogs and what it would be like for me, for us and for them, to have to leave them behind.
Desde que empezó la migración masiva de venezolanos vi por redes sociales que muchos lograban trasladar a sus mascotas a chile, ecuador, Estados Unidos, España, con el propósito de reunirse nuevamente o no separase de sus peludos. Algunos llegaban con ellos a un nuevo país y otros mandaban a buscarlos después de algunos meses o años. Cuando supe que yo también estaría en la categoría de migrantes, pensé en mis perros y en cómo sería para mi, para nosotros y para ellos, tener que dejarlos atrás.
This is the first of a series of posts in which I will tell you how I researched the process of moving my pets internationally, who I asked, who I trusted, how much the budget was and what the experience was like for my husband and me in Bogota and what the experience was like for the dogs as told by the veterinarian. The experience of my parents, in Venezuela, who had to see the dogs leave in the vet's car, can be found in the blog of my mom @Aurodivys, who will also be telling how was for her the process of preparing them for their departure, and seeing them leave.
Esta es la primera de una serie de publicaciones en las cuales les contaré cómo averigüé el proceso de traslado internacional de mis mascotas, a quienes pregunté, en quien confié, cuánto fue el presupuesto y cómo fue la experiencia para mi esposo y para mi en Bogotá y cómo fue la experiencia de los perros según lo que nos contaba la veterinaria. La experiencia de mis padres, en Venezuela, quienes tuvieron que ver partir a los perritos en el carro de la veterinaria pueden encontrarla en el blog de mi mamá @Aurodivys, quien también irá contando cómo fue para ella el proceso de prepararlos para su ida, y verlos marchar.
This journey began when I started asking for budgets for the travel of my pets to different Instagram accounts that offer the service of advice and relocation. Because of how expensive the service is, the intention was to bring us two of my three dogs first, and then raise money to bring us the third dog. However, by that time when I started asking around I didn't have the money to even bring one of them 🙈.
Este viaje comenzó cuando empecé a preguntar presupuestos para el traslado de mis mascotas a distintas cuentas de Instagram que ofrecen el servicio de asesoría y traslado. Por lo costoso del servicio, la intención era traernos a dos de mis tres perros primero, y luego reunir para traernos al tercer perro. Sin embargo, para ese entonces cuando empecé a preguntar no tenía el dinero ni siquiera para traer a uno de ellos 🙈.
Aside from the costs, I was a bit overwhelmed by the different ways my dogs could travel: by road, by plane, as cargo... in the dark at the bottom of the plane, as emotional support pets, with a family member, with someone we hired, a trip divided in two parts (one part guaranteed by them and the other part we would take responsibility for...), etc. There were many options and each one meant different processes, different costs and decisions to make.
A parte de los costos, me agobiaba un poco las distintas formas en las que podían viajar mis perros: por carretera, por avión, como carga… en la oscuridad de la parte baja del avión, como mascotas de apoyo emocional, junto a algún familiar, junto a alguna persona que contratáramos, un viaje dividido en dos partes (una parte garantizada por ellos y la otra parte nos encargábamos nosotros…), etc. Eran muchas opciones y cada una significaba procesos distintos, costos distintos y decisiones que tomar.
The first quote I got from a recognized Instagram account was $3,200 dollars for two pets, $3,650 dollars for three pets. This trip would not be complete, I would have to take the dogs to Maracaibo, a city at the other end of Cumana, where my pets live. The second budget, more economical than the previous one (950 dollars each pet) and included the search for my dogs in Cumaná but the people in charge took a long time to answer the messages, had no whatsapp picture and did not inspire me any confidence. I threw in the towel... I didn't even have the money. This was about September last year, I put the issue aside and tried not to watch videos of puppies on TikTok, they all made me sad.
El primer presupuesto lo obtuve de una cuenta en Instagram reconocida, 3.200 dólares por dos mascotas, 3.650 dólares por tres mascotas. Este viaje no sería completo, yo tendría que encargarme de llevar a los perros hasta Maracaibo, una ciudad que se encuentra al otro extremo de Cumaná, donde viven mis mascotas. El segundo presupuesto, más económico que el anterior (950 dólares cada mascota) e incluía la búsqueda de mis perros en Cumaná pero las personas encargadas tardaban mucho en responder los mensajes, no tenían fotografía de whatsapp y no me inspiraban nada de confianza. Tiré la toalla… si ni quisiera teníamos el dinero. Esto fue aproximadamente en septiembre del año pasado, dejé a un lado el tema e intenté no ver videos de perritos en TikTok, todos me ponían triste.
The money I had saved I was planning to use it to get all my papers in Venezuela to be able to work here in Colombia: legalization, GTU and apostille of university documents, which implies paying hundreds of dollars to a manager in Venezuela. In November, the Venezuelan embassy in Colombia disclosed on social networks that the university documents could be apostilled from Colombia. In other words, the money I had saved could be used for something else, and I immediately thought of my dogs. The illusion grew when my husband told me that he would pay for the trip of one of them, his favorite, Blacky, so for now I could be in charge of Bruno.
El dinero que tenía ahorrado pensaba destinarlo a sacar todos mis papeles en Venezuela para poder trabajar acá en Colombia: legalización, GTU y apostilla de los documentos universitarios, lo que implica pagarle cientos de dólares a un gestor en Venezuela. En noviembre, la embajada de Venezuela en Colombia divulgó en redes sociales que se podrían apostillar los documentos universitarios desde Colombia. Es decir, el dinero que tenía ahorrado podía destinarlo a otra cosa, y de inmediato pensé en mis perros. La ilusión creció cuando mi esposo me comentó que pagaría el viaje de uno de ellos, su consentido, el Blacky, así que por ahora yo podría encargarme de Bruno.
This change of plans coincided with my visit to Medellin, where we met other Venezuelans who used to live on the border with Colombia and managed to bring their pets to this country. I asked for the contact of the veterinarian who brought them. I felt confident to see the dogs safe and sound in Colombia and she was the one who took care of everything to get them transferred. I was given her number and wrote to Dr. Haythe. Here are our first conversations and the budget she gave me: $2,000 for the entire trip for my two dogs, with everything included.
Este cambio de planes coincidió con mi visita a Medellín, donde conocimos a otros venezolanos que antes residían en la frontera con Colombia y lograron traer a sus mascotas hasta este país. Pedí el contacto de la veterinaria que los trajo. Me inspiraba confianza ver a los perritos en Colombia sanos y salvos y fue ella la que se encargó de hacer todo para lograr su traslado. Me dieron su número y le escribí a la Doctora Haythe. Aquí les muestro nuestras primeras conversaciones y el presupuesto que me indicó: 2.000 dólares el viaje completo de mis dos perros, con todo incluido.
I asked her to make a video call to talk to her "personally", meet her and clarify all my doubts. Between my parents, my husband and I wrote down several questions we had about the process. Some of them were: what would the trip be like?, what does the budget include?, do they have to sleep during the trip?, do they need any kind of training...? I also asked her if we could have a signed contract, so I would feel more confident about the service. She told me that she could do it with her lawyer.
Le pedí hacer una videollamada para hablar con ella “personalmente”, conocerla y aclarar todas mis dudas. Entre mis papás, mi esposo y yo escribimos varias preguntas que teníamos acerca del proceso. Algunas de ellas fueron: ¿cómo sería el viaje? ¿Qué incluye el presupuesto? ¿Hay que dormirlos durante el viaje? ¿Necesitan algún tipo de adiestramiento?. También le pregunté si podíamos hacer un contrato firmado, así me sentiría más segura del servicio. Me dijo que sin problemas podía hacerlo con su abogado.
Talking to her I felt quite calm, you can see the love that Dr. Haythe has for animals, her kindness and patience to answer even the dumbest questions. I felt that she had to be the one in charge of traveling with my dogs.
Hablando con ella me sentí bastante tranquila, se nota el amor que tiene la doctora Haythe por los animales, su amabilidad y paciencia para responder hasta las preguntas más tontas. Sentí que ella tenía que ser la encargada de viajar con mis perros.
Dr. Haythe is a person who knows all the necessary procedures for international pet travel and also has the professional knowledge to take good care of them. That first conversation with her by video call convinced me and for the first time I felt that my dogs could come to Colombia. There were still many things to organize, but the plan became clearer and clearer and the excitement invaded us.
La doctora Haythe es una persona que sabe de los trámites necesarios para realizar el viaje internacional de las mascotas y además cuenta con los conocimientos profesionales para cuidarlos bien. Esa primera conversación con ella por videollamada me convenció y por primera vez sentí que mis perros podrían venir a Colombia. Todavía quedaban muchas cosas que organizar, pero el plan se veía cada vez más claro y la emoción nos invadía.
There is a lot to tell and in order not to make these posts so long, in my next post I will tell you the different ways in which the trip was planned, finally how it happened and how was the moving process.
