This old girl needs some lovin’ too. Most of the time our 12 year old Lab/retriever mix sleeps right where you need to be. You know in the kitchen when trying to make a meal or she won’t get up off the floor even if the vacuum is next to her face. Oh but if she hears you cutting veggies in the kitchen… you bet your ass her head will pop around the corner waiting for a veggie treat. She is all about food but runs from a bath
I’m typically the one that gives Sadie her spa treatments. Clip them toenails, a good brushin’ and a good washin’ then another brushin’ after she is dry. As any Labrador or Retriever owner knows… they shed A LOT and have a thick undercoat. Vacuuming everyday is a must. Now I have tried a bunch of different brushes but the Furminator is the best one yet! It’s amazing how much hair this thing pulls off of Sadie
It takes me a good 45 minutes to brush her really good. Most of the time she falls asleep unless I hit one of the spots that gets her back leg going. The amount of hair I get off of her is crazy!! I sometimes get worried I’m gonna brush her bald. Lol. Look how much hair came off her back leg the first time I went over it with the Furminator…
When I’m done brushing her the amount of hair I get off of her fills up one of those plastic grocery bags. I have to pack in down in the bag or else it will over flow. I honestly could have went over her whole body again but I didn’t want a bald dog running around. This is the bag after closing the bag and compacting it. I will probably get close to that amount after she is dry later today.
Getting her to the bathtub is a challenge. You can’t even lure her in their with treats. Not even bacon!! @ 90lbs she isn’t that easy to just pick up and carry in there. I would end up dropping her in the tub. I gotta straddle her back and not let her deter from the path to the bathroom. Then I can pick her front legs up and into the tub, then her back legs. Then she looks at me like I am torturing her.
Between the time I get her all suds up with shampoo and ready to rinse, she thinks it’s time to get out. Once I stop massaging the shampoo in she thinks she is done. So she makes a move to climb out of the tub.
The drying part is the toughest. It takes about 5 towels to get her dry. She has that thicker retriever hair and she has some nerve issues in her spine. Wobblers Syndrome. Her hind legs are pretty weak so any amount of pressure or rubbing and she collapses and sits. So I just lay her down on the floor and violently dry her off. She likes a good fast dry off session.
All clean and fluffed up… now it’s back to sleep.
Between brushing, washing, and drying I’m spent. I was sweating my butt off brushing her, then her hair would stick all over my hands and arms. Lol. Well now we got a fresh smelling, less hair shedding, lazy, 12 year old lab/retriever… laying around. Maybe I will do the same…
