The rate at which distractions have grown in this present time is really alarming.. When you want to stay focused, grounded in your pursuits and firm on your tasks, something else that is totally unrelated to your objectives crops up, stealing the show.
We have all experienced one form of distraction or the other but What do we do about all the distractions that come our way?
*Do we hide inside a cave and become cavemen again?.....heck no. So then, What can be done to minimize or even deal with distractions when we need to stay focused?
Personally, I have several ways of managing distractions. I feel that distractions are easier managed than eradicated because we live in a world that thrives on using distractions as a means of making money.
*Check this out, you are at home watching a movie on your satellite dish (DStv) and the next thing, an advert pops up that tends to steal the show.
You get drawn to the product being advertised and then you keep hoping the advert will pop up again so that you can get more details on the product. This causes your interest in the movie to dwindle. This is an example of a distraction.
I stay focused by prioritizing. I do this especially when I am at work and I have a lot of tasks ahead of me. I sort out the things I need to do in order of priority and begin dealing with the things that are urgent first before going to those which are less urgent.
Focusing on the tasks that are urgently needed to be submitted gives me a sense of urgency which in turn kills every appetite I might have for any distraction whatsoever and until I am done with those tasks, I don't even take a break. That's how focused I can be.
Secondly, I prepare a to-do-list for my daily routine. I used to do it with my phone but since I discovered that most of my distractions come from my phone, I stopped it and started writing things down in my notebook. Writing down the things that I need to do, helps me commit it to memory and keeps me focused.
Asides writing things down in my notebook, I also write down the things I need to do especially at work on a sticky note and paste it on my desk. This way, my eyes are on my tasks.
Furthermore, when I need to stay focused on something for a few hours, I switch off my data on my phone or better still I set my phone on Do not disturb (DND) mode. This way calls and notifications from my phone are silenced and I get to see them only when I am less busy.
These are the tips I apply personally that helps me stay focused on whatever I am doing. They might seem simple but they are effective in helping get my tasks completed.
